D. SUGG, prominent cattleman of the Indian Territory, shot and killed JEFF SHORT yesterday evening on the Sugg ranch in the Chickasaw Nation some 50 miles northwest of Gainesville. Sugg was out hunting on his place when he came upon Jeff Short and his two brothers who were engaged in tearing down and hauling away a small tenant house, property of Sugg. As soon as the Shorts saw Sugg, it is said they opened fire on him, wounding him in the right side and shoulder, though not fatally. Sugg returned the fire with a shotgun and killed Jeff Short. Sugg is a brother of E. C. SUGG, who shot and killed GEORGE TAYLOR, alias CANTERBERRY, his former ranch foreman, some two months ago, and both killings took place within a few yards of each other at a place called Sugg postoffice. Sugg has not been arrested but will go to Paris, Texas and surrender himself as soon as he recovers from his wounds sufficiently to do so. ========= Another Account Paris, Texas, Dec. 18: The following telegram was received today: Henrietta, Texas, Dec. 17. To the United States Marshal, Paris, Texas: IKE SUGGS killed JEFF SHORT in the Chickasaw Nation today. They want a marshal from your district. Signed LON BARDON, deputy marshal. Deputy marshals from the Indian Territory today say with reference to the foregoing that at JEFF SHORT'S house near Col. E. C. SUGG'S ranch in the Chickasaw Nation, a desperate fight took place in which IKE SUGGS killed JEFF SHORT and seriously wounded his brother with a double-barreled shotgun. The Short brothers shot at Suggs three times without effect. Ike Suggs is a brother of Col. E. C. Suggs, who was at last term of the Paris federal court, was acquitted of the charge of the murder of G. W. CANTERBURY and the two Short men are brothers of ROBERT SHORT, who was a witness for the prosecution of E. C. SUGGS. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Jefferson County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/jefferson/jefferson.htm
