Whitfield who was called home on Friday, June 15, 2001. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at Lutheran Church of Prayer, 8001 Panorama Drive, Bakersfield, CA at 2 p.m., June 19, 2001. Pastor Gene Bush will officiate the services. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great Pa, and former Elder extended to his family the Blessing of the Grace of God during his last days on earth while in the hospital. Lloyd was a Christian who served as an active member in various office of the Lutheran Faith for many years. Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. He is survived by wife, Phyllis of Bakersfield, CA; son, Michael and Christy Whitfield of Sacramento, CA; daughter, Cheryl and Lymon Bud Hensley of Bakersfield, CA; sisters, Inita and Lloyd Smith of Three Rivers, CA, Geneva and Keith Burch of Taft, CA, Barbara Sue Whitfield and family friend, Cheryl Knapp of Escondido, Ca, Joel and Tina Mueller of Phoenix, AZ and great granddaughter, Samantha Lynn Rasmussen of Bakersfield, CA, extended great granddaughter, Samantha Dow of Sacramento, CA and special sister in law, Muriel C. Sauter of Bakersfield, CA and a host of loving relatives and friends. Lloyd was born March 6, 1930 in Waurika, Ok and spent his childhood on rural Oklahoma farms. In 1942, he traveled by train to Maricopa, CA with his family. He attended school there, distinguished himself in the sports program, received the honor of the Best Athlete for his football prowess. Married the cheer leader, Phyllis Mary Sauter on Jan. 1, 1949 and moved to Bakersfield. Lloyd valued his military as a Corporal in the Marine Corps during the Korean War Action from July 7, 1950 through February 16, 1952. While serving there, he became a Fox Hole Christian accepting the Lord. He was baptized and confirmed as a member of the Lutheran Faith in 1956 at Grace Church. In 1962, he became a charter member of Bethany in Oildale. He joined the Church of Prayer in 1993. He graduated from the Bakersfield Adult School program and attended Bakersfield Junior College. He spent his working career of 36 years in the oil industry. He took an early retirement as a Senior Mechanical Engineering Inspector for Tosco Corporation at the Bakersfield Refinery and joined his beloved wife as office administrator in the insurance business. In the latter years he enjoyed their time traveling together, on business. Lloyd was an avid reader of stories of the old west from his book collection by Zane Grey and Louis Lamour. Lloyd was a respectable man of honor and integrity whose word was his bond. He loved and cherished his entire family and valued his beloved wife, Phyllis as his best friend. We all reciprocated those feelings and will profoundly miss his physical presence in our daily lives. The memories will sustain our hearts until we meet again. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Lutheran Church of Prayer Memorial Fund, 8001 Panorama Drive, Bakersfield, 93306, The American Heart Association or a charity of your choice.
