MISSING ISSUE 23 NOVEMBER 1906 MISSING ISSUE DECEMBER 7 AND 28, 1906 The Ravia Gazette, Friday, 14 December 1906 Accused of Theft - Hack Driver Steals Over Coat and Makes Successful Escape Quite a lot of excitement was occasioned on the streets Tuesday by the firing of a pistol near the Frisco Depot. After the smoke of battle had cleared away it was learned that U.S. Marshall Dero Duncan had attempted to arrest Alfred Lewis, one of the hack boys, on a charge of theft. Lewis has stolen an overcoat and some other things and when the Marshall went to place him under arrest he (Lewis) took for tall timber, at which time the Marshall empted his revolver in the air, but the bluff didn't work - he made his escape. This is one job Lewis quit without giving his employer one moments notice, so it is safe to say that he won't be hanging around the stable in the morning looking for his old job. More Improvements J. C. Pike, of Bolivar, Missouri, was here this week and closed a deal for a lot of timber on the Washita River. Mr. Pike states he has a large saw mill plant and will move same here about January 1st, at which time he will begin active work in sawing up this timber. This plant when in operation, will be worth much to this town, and before another year passes away we may expect to see great improvements in Ravia. Oil Well Mrs. Katie O'Brian, of Russet, one of the largest land owners in the Chickasaw Nation, was in Ravia Wednesday, and gave information to Col. R. T. Wilkinson to the effect that she contemplated sinking an oil well in the near future on her land. Mrs. O'Brian seems to think that oil can be found in paying quantities and is muchly interested over the prospects. From all indications there is bound to be oil in this country, and we may not be surprised at any time to hear of an oil well being sunk in Ravia. Mrs. C. E. Merrill visited in Ardmore Monday. George W. Edwards returned Wednesday from an agency trip through the Ardmore district. J. S. Ragsdale and Harry Taylor, of near Madill were trading in town Thursday. Rev. J. C. Scivally, of Ardmore, is here assisting Rev. J. C. Morris in a series of meetings at the Methodist Church. A large attendance and an interesting meeting is expected. Mr. and Mrs. T. T. Harper of Thackerville, Indian Territory, visited the editor and family Sunday. Mr. Harper is a land agent at Thackerville. We are sorry to chronicle the fact that Mrs. A. N. Hooser is quite ill this week. Dr. J. H. Logan of Norton was here Wednesday. Col. R. T. Wilkinson informs us that he has been corresponding with B. C. Mason, a hardware dealer of Olathe, Kansas, and that Mr. Mason is figuring on moving to Ravia for the purpose of putting in a large stock of hardware. We are of the opinion that when Mr. Mason visits Ravia he will find the situation far better than he anticipated. W. A. McAllister returned Wednesday from a prospective trip to New Mexico. He states that there was some misunderstanding in regard to the section of land on which he filed last summer and that he will not file now until next spring.
