Monk, of Wapanucka, was in town Wednesday. W. R. White, of Cope, was here on business Wednesday. Deputy U. S. Marshal Burton of Millcreek, was over Thursday. Ned Looney left for St. Louis Saturday, where he is attending school. A. A. Whelchel, of Connerville, paid us a pleasant call on yesterday. W. S. Johnson and Ed. Creekmore, both of Wapanucka, were visiting with us Thursday. A. A. Chapman of Ravia, was in town New Year's day and looks to be in good health. Mrs. W. A. Looney, of Ardmore, is over visiting with Mr. and Mrs. James E. Looney. Mrs. Shearer, after spending the holidays with home folks has returned to her school at Marietta. James Tanner, our old-time barber late of Ardmore was shaking hands with friends on last Wednesday. George Bixby, of Muskogee, a brother of our Tams Bixby, was down this week, looking after his interest here. Arthur Nesbitt has resigned his position as constable to the U. S. Commissioner's Court to accept a position on the Indian police force. Miss Nettie Stobaugh, after spending the holidays with her brother, Judge Stobaugh, has returned to Roff, where she is teaching. J. E. Carter, of Coatsworth, has been appointed to the office of constable to succeed Arthur Nesbitt. Mr. Carter is a fine young man and will make a good officer. Teddy Colbert won the prize for the best letter to Santa Claus written by a boy or girl under six years of age, Carrie Pangburn being a close second. And Ruth Castleberry won the prize for the best letter from those who were over six years old. James Loper has returned from Sherman, where he went before Christmas to attend Mrs. Loper who was crippled in an accident. He reports that Mrs. Loper is improving slowly and will probably be up soon. Mrs. H. E. Bailey, residence second story in depot, has been very ill with rheumatism since before Christmas. DIED H. T. Gorden, a nephew of our townsman, J. H. Gorden, died here last week of pneumonia. He leaves a wife and three children to mourn his loss. We understand that he had only been here a few days, he having come here from Texas. The News extends its warmest sympathy to the bereaved family and relatives of the deceased. The Tishomingo News, 11 January 1907 LOCALS Will Shelton of Emet was in the city yesterday. S. M. White, of Wynnewood, was down yesterday. Jim Howser, of Emet, was in town Monday between towns. Col. James E. Johnston, of McAlester, was in town Monday. Lee Milburn and John Jarnigin, of Milburn, were in town Monday. Wood Smith, of Wiley, transacted business in Tishomingo Monday. G. W. Burris was attending to legal business in Ardmore Thrusday. Attorney W. L. Ratliffm, of Mill Creek, was in the county seat Monday. Charley Burden, of Pontotoc, was a business visitor in the county seat Monday. Will Evans, of Madill, was on our streets Tuesday shaking hands with his many friends. Mrs. Porter, wife of our former postmaster, J. A. Porter, of Ardmore, is visiting friends and relatives here this week. John McLish, of Belton, made a pleasant call at The News office this week. John knows a good thing when he sees it. Misses Winnie Harrison and Myrtle Milburn, of Milburn spent several days in the county seat last week visiting friends and relatives. Judge J. T. Fowler, of Wapanucka, came up Thursday to subscribe for The News because it's the only Republican paper in Johnston County. Mr. Collum, of Connersville, now of Oklahoma and Miss Johnson daughter of Henry Johnson of Connersville, were married at the Court House Monday evening. L. W. Gregg spent Saturday at Mill Creek hunting with Marshals Burton and Moore. He brought back eighty-six quail as evidence of the day's sport. G. W. Lowery, of Mill Creek, candidate for County Clerk of Johnston County, was on our streets Thursday of this week making friends for the coming Democratic primary. Elder S. R. Hawkins, of South McAlester, will preach at the Christian Church at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, January 13, 1907. Elder Hawkins is one of the great preachers of the church and all should hear him. The bankrupt stock of groceries of Bailey & Jennings sold Wednesday to Hutchens Bros. for $730.00, being very nearly the appraised value. Notes and accounts were bid in by C. W. Lucy at 9 per cent of their face value. Mr. Tom White, of Mannsville, was in the county seat yesterday shaking hands with friends. He didn't come around, but from what we saw on the street we should judge that he must be thinking of running for some office. Arthur Sinclair is over from Ardmore. Capt. Main was over from Ravia Friday. Lewis Cass, of Cope, was in to see us Monday. Born - To Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Furgison Monday morning January 7th, a ten pound boy. H. C. Shultz, cashier of the First Naitonal Bank, is attending to business in Lehigh this week. Jim Brennan and Charley Bunch left for St. Louis Monday evening. We wouldn't say when they will be back. LOST - Two walking sticks. One a plain hickory with curved handle, the other one a knotty stick with perpendicular handle, imitation of ivory.
