Born February 28, 1907, Wapanucka, Oklahoma, graduated Wapanucka High 1924. Full session Page for Oklahoma State Senate ouse of Representatives. Graduated Murray State College, Tishomingo, Ok. Started work for Oklahoma Pipeline Co. in 1927, later became Chief of Payroll, State President of Oklahoma Pipeline Co. Employees Association, resigned in 1938. Graduated Oklahoma University School of Law in 1942, member of Phi Delta Legal Fraternity, Delta Tau Delta Social Fraternity, Congress Club, Lawyers Club, Supervisor for the National Youth Administration. He volunteered for U.S. Naval service and achieved rank of Lieutenant, Pacific Theater, 1942-47. Appointed Assistant County Attorney of Seminole County 1947; elected President of State League of Young Democrats 1947; appointed City Attorney for Wewoka; elected and served two terms in the House of Representatives, representing Seminole County 1955-58, during which served on the Special Ways and Means Committee; acted as Vice Chairman of Judicial Committee; and served on the Roads and Highways Committee, among others. Elected and served one term as Senator representing Seminole and Pontotoc Counties 1958-62, during which he served on the Roads and Highways Committee and Metorical Committee. During his term, he received recognition from the Oklahoma Education Association as the person primarily responsible for obtaining permanent funding for education through the dedicated use of oil and gas revenues. He returned to private law practice from 1964 until his death in Wewoka. He was preceded in death by sons, Jan Eric Cartwright 2-21-86 and Jon Clifford Fraser Cartwright 11-28-45. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley Fraser Cartwright, and his two grandsons, Jay Alberding Cartwright and Jon Fraser Cartwright. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Jan Eric Cartwright Memorial Fund, 2516 N.W. Expressway, OKC, Ok 73112. A graveside service will be held at Oakwood Cemetery, Wewoka, Ok. on Saturday, Jan. 26, 1991, at 12:00 noon.
