Services will be at noon May 27 at Northridge United Methodist Church, 9650 Reseda Blvd. Mr. Estes was born Jan. 26, 1918, in Tishomingo. He was a member of the Chickasaw Indian Nation. He graduated with a degree in civil engineering in 1940 from the University of Oklahoma. He also played snare drum for the Pride of Oklahoma, OU's marching band. He was an OU supporter and in 2000, was awarded the Regents' Alumni Award. He was a captain during World War II in the Air Force's 37th Fighter Squadron that inspected P-38 airplanes. He moved to southern California after the war. He married Jeanne Price in 1948. They founded an architectural house plan business, Nationwide Plan Book Co., later called Hiawatha Estes & Associates, and operated it for over 30 years. Mr. Estes' syndicated newspaper column ran for many years in the Los Angeles Times and many other foreign and domestic newspapers. He enjoyed gardening and international travel. He was known for his colorful flower garden, and he traveled to over 100 countries. Mr. Estes is survived by his son, Kenneth Estes of Susanville, Calif.; grandchildren, Dean, Derek, Elise and Jake; step-grandson, Brent Murillo and his son, Brian Estes, of Redmond, Wash., and grandchildren, Benjamin, Michael and Melanie.
