He passed away April 30, 2005 at Elk City, Oklahoma at the age of 77 years, 11 months and 28 days. Joe grew up in the Erick and Texola communities while his father worked for the Rock Island Railroad Company. At the age of about 17 he moved to Shamrock, Texas to live with his sister, Reece and family. While in Shamrock Joe worked as a heavy equipment operator for Lablane. After leaving Shamrocfk Joe went with his buddies to California jumping from boxcar to boxcar. In 1945 he was drafted into the United States Army and served his country during World War II. In 1946 he re-enlisted and continued his service until his discharge in 1947. Joe returned to Shamrock before moving to Cheyenne in the early 1950's. Joe lived on the edge of Cheyenne where he earned a living selling milk to those in Roger Mills County. In 1966 he started with Roger Mills County laying pipeline and retired in 1988 after 22 years. In February of 1983 Joe was married to Billy Purdy in Cheyesnne, Oklahoma and they continued to make Cheyenne their home. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, 4 sisters and 1 brother. The family would like to send a special Thank You to Joe'a special caregivers, Linda Scrivner, Wanda Whitswon, Lonnie and Pat Isch, Dorothy Smith and to those at Grdeat Plains Regional medical center in the ICU. Services were held Wednesday, May 4, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Cheyenne First Baptist Church officiated by Tom Hargues. Burial was held at Cheyenne Cemetery, Cheyenne, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma under the direction of Rose Chapel Funeral Service, Cheyenne, Oklahoma. Survivors: 2 sons Ricky Joe Follis and wife Donna, Amarillo, Texas, Robert Dale Holley and wife LaDonna, Prague, Oklahoma; 1 step- daughter Sherry Johnsxon and husband Jim, Austin, Texas; 6 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, step brother Dewey Keith, Arizona; his niece Sharon Pennington and husband Jim andx family, Elk CFity, Oklahoma; a host of other relatives and friends.
