She was born April 25, 1915 at Iola, KS, to George and Glendora Phillips Helsel. She moved to Forgan, OK where she grew up and graduated from Forgan High School in 1934. Evelyn married Alfred Eugene Leaming on January 2, 1935 at Liberal, KS. He preceded her in death on April 21, 2001. They made their home in Forgan, OK, Bucklin, KS and Thayer, KS before moving to Pleasanton where they lived for 25 years prior to retirement from farming and ranching. They then moved to Spring Hill where she lived until her death. Evelyn worked for the school cafeteria and Swan Manor Nursing Home at LaCygne, KS and also the Pleasanton Nursing Home, Country View Nursing Home at Prescott, KS and Linn County Food Growers at Pleasanton. She was preceded in death also by three brothers, Wyatt, Lloyd and Phillip Helsel; one sister, Sarah Burlinson and one granddaughter, Janee Umbarger. Survivors include two sons; Joe Leaming and Les Leaming, both of Newkirk; four daughters, Glenna Jean Mahoney of Spring Hill, Karen Umbarger of Wichita, KS, Carol Newcomb of Pittsburg, KS and Sallee Hess of Waverly, KS; 19 grand- children; 39 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Evelyn willed her body to science. A memorial service was held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 8, 2001 at the Coffel-Schneider Chapel in Pleasanton. The family suggests contributions to the American Diabetes Association or Hospice.
