He was 103. The son of Ivan Wright and Ella (Reed) Vickery, he was born June 16, 1896 near Arkansas City. Firman grew up on the family homestead southwest of Newkirk. He attended Banner Rural School, completing his early education with the eighth grade. The family moved to a farm southwest of Arkansas City, and Vickery attended a business college in Arkansas City for two years. He also worked on the family farming operation. On June 27, 1918 Firman and Gertrude Doris May were married in Winfield. They made their home on the family homestead until 1924 when he bought the first farm of his own near Deer Creek. While in the Deer Creek area, he served on the school board in the Deer Creek District. In 1948, Vickery moved his family to the Silverdale, Kansas area, and he served on the Silverdale township board. In 1964 he moved back to Newkirk and retired to a "smaller farm", his backyard garden. He has been a resident of the Newkirk Nursing Center for the past few years, and even there continued farming by growing tomatoes. Vickery was a member of the Newkirk Historical Society, and he enjoyed working on small engines. Vickery is survived by two sons, Kenneth Vickery of Silverdale, Kansas and H. Ralph Vickery of Newkirk; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Gertrude on June 13, 1968, one son, two daughters, his parents, one brother, two grandchildren, and one great- grandchild. A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 6 in the Newkirk Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Hollifield, minister of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Miller-Stahl Funeral Service. A memorial fund has been established with the Newkirk Historical Society.
