All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ===================================================================== ::Tulocay Cemetery--Napa CA Burl Foutch Napa Valley Register Friday, August 25, 2006 1:16 AM PDT NAPA Burl James Foutch, 82, was born at Tonkawa, Okla., on Aug. 26, 1923, to Riley and Millie Foutch. When he was 5 years old, he took his father's Model T and along with his brother, Glen and sister, Vivian, left for town to go to the fair. He managed to drive the car down the dirt road but had not reached the highway before his father stopped the big adventure. The scolding he received prevented his repeating the incident. The family moved to Wasco, where he attended school. Burl was an avid roller and dance skater and his pastime in the service was skating. He enlisted in the Air Corps on Oct. 31, 1942, and served at Minter Field in a pilot training command where he maintained the BT13 and AT6 airplanes. He was transferred to Albuquerque, N.M., where he maintained AT11 bombers and the UC78. He was then sent to Amarillo, Texas, to B29 bomber school where he became a flight crew member and received his wings. His next move was to Roswell, N.M., maintaining B29s. Burl was at Roswell when the war ended but he had to stay on to decommission and "pickle" planes coming in from overseas. He was discharged in Santa Ana on Feb. 12, 1946. While he was on furlow at his mother's house in Santa Rosa, he met his wife, Lilliam, or "Babe," as she is called. They were married on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 1946, at the First Presbyterian Church in Napa. Burl went on to work as a civilian at what is now known as Travis Air Force Base on May 3, 1946, working on the C54s that flew the Berlin Air Lift. He transferred to the motor pool where he became the Vehicle Maintenance Officer. He attended Solano Junior College and Napa College, where he received his AA degree and a certificate in industrial management. He re-designed the 40 and 20K aircraft loaders so that they were hydraulic instead of cable operated, which made them much more efficient. The Air Force sent him to Tachakowa, Japan, to change the K loading equipment to hydraulic. He served several years on the Supervisory Committee of Travis Credit Union. His daughter, Pamela, was born Feb. 13, 1949, and as she grew up, he coached her softball team. She had a "wicked" left hand throw. Some of his favorite sayings were "hemo-so-hot-ta," "You're not looking at the big picture," and "You're not holding your mouth right." The family enjoyed camping and hearing Burl play the harmonica. Burl and Babe were avid square dancers for many years. One of Burl's prides and joys was his red and white 1957 Cameo Carrier pick-up truck. Everyone knew it was him when they saw the pick-up. His next joy was his Cherokee 180 airplane, which he flew around the U.S. and Canada. Burl submitted his retirement papers in 1974 and retired in August of that year, just after he turned 51. He belonged to SIRS # 104 club and their RV club, for which he organized many outings. He and Babe did a lot of RVing across the lower U.S., Canada and Alaska. They were on an RV outing when he had a heart attack and became ill. He leaves his loving wife, Babe Foutch; his daughter, Pam Jones and son-in-law Robert Jones; two grandchildren, Ryan Jones and Denae Jones; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Merle and Barbara Hunter and several nieces and nephews. He enjoyed his life to the fullest, the many friends he made along the way and life's adventures that came his way. His family and friends find comfort in knowing Burl accepted Christ as his Savior. Friends are invited to attend funeral services on Tuesday, Aug. 29 at 1 p.m. at the chapel of Richard Pierce Funeral Service, 1660 Silverado Trail, Napa. Interment will be at Tulocay Cemetery. You may express your condolences and sign an online guest book at www.rpfsc.com. The family suggests memorial contributions to Kaiser Hospice, 975 Sereno Dr., Vallejo, CA 94589, Hospice of Napa Valley, 414 South Jefferson St., Napa, CA 94559 or to a charity of the donor's choice. ========= Burl Foutch Saturday, August 26, 2006 1:17 AM PDT NAPA Burl James Foutch, 82, was born at Tonkawa, Okla., on Aug. 26, 1923, to Riley and Millie Foutch.
