He was 63. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Roberts Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Kalfus, Blackwell First Church of the Nazarene, officiating. Burial will be in the Blackwell IOOF Cemetery with full military rites conducted by a U.S. Army detail from Fort Sill. Gilbert Franklin Pope was born April 27, 1933, in McAlester, the son of Laman and Elisa May (Lishbrook) Pope. He grew up in McAlester and attended Jones Academy. Following his schooling he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served for 22 years. He was married to Patsy Jean Gage on March 8, 1958, in Wyandotte. During his military career, Pope was stationed in Texas and Missouri stateside, and his tours of duty overseas included Germany, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and Thailand. Following his retirement on July 18, 1972, he moved to Blackwell where he was employed at Wetmore's. Due to ill health, he was forced to retire and the family moved to Braman. Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Dunagan of Blackwell and Sherry Lynn Wahl of Salina, Kan; one son, Chester Leon of Blackwell; one sister, Marie Scharf of Blackwell; and two brothers, Laman of Phoenix, Ariz., and Raymond of Ardmore; and seven grandchildren.
