She was 46. An evening prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Ponca Indian United Methodist Church. The traditional funeral feast will be held at noon Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the church. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Phil Byington, pastor of Ponca Indian United Methodist Church, officiating and the Rev. Abraham Jackson, pastor of Bennington Indian United Methodist Church in Bennington, assisting. Burial will follow in the Ponca Tribal Cemetery under direction of Grace Memorial Chapel. Gladys Laverne Roughface entered this life on Aug. 27, 1956, in Pawnee, the daughter of Bronson Roughface Sr. and Vivian Blueback Pemberton. She was reared in White Eagle and attended Fort Sill Indian School in Lawton. While a student at Fort Sill, she played basketball, football, ran track and was Homecoming Queen at one time. She attended Northeastern Oklahoma College in Miami and also three years in ROTC. On Nov. 20, 1982, she was united to Gary Burris in Ponca City, and the couple made their first home in Ponca City until moving to Tahlequah. She served her family as a homemaker and enjoyed gardening, throwing horseshoes, bowling, watching OU football, spending time with her kids and grandkids, cooking, making meat pies, swimming in the Illinois River, listening to music, especially Elvis, and attending church activities. She was a member of the Ponca Indian United Methodist Church and a proud member of the Ponca tribe. Cherished memories will linger on in the hearts of her husband, Gary Burris of the home in Tahlequah, her five daughters, Sevetlana and Jerome West of Tahlequah, Lea Burris and James Hernandez of El Dorado, Kan., Laverne Burris of Muskogee, Hellen Burris and Bobby Burris, both of Tahlequah, her four sons, Robert and Andrea Burris of Ponca City, Hawley and Maria Tsoodle of Santa Fe, N.M., Raymond and Renee Burris of Tahlequah and Gary Burris Jr. of the home in Tahlequah, her father, Bronson Roughface Sr. and stepmother Nellie Roughface of Ponca City, seven sisters, Karen Littlecook, Nelcine Warrior and Roxy Cornell, all of Ponca City, Mary Jo Phillips of Copan, Rebecca Roughface, Camilla Arkeketa, Lucinda WhiteTail and Bethany Roughface, all of Ponca City, four brothers, Theodore Overland of Dallas, Texas, Nelson Roughface, Orlando Williams Jr. and Bronson Roughface Jr., all of Ponca City, seven grandchildren, numerous cousins, aunts and uncles as well as other relatives and friends. Her mother, on Jan. 30, 1993, and her grandparents preceded Gladys in death. Casket bearers will be Theodore Rhodd, Jeffrey Hernandez, Leon Hernandez, Brandon Roughface, John Burris and Anthony Burris.
