He was 70. The son of Conrad A. and Anna F. (Gruntmeir) Luis, he was born Jan. 21, 1933 in Kingfisher, OK. He grew up in the Newkirk area and received his education in Red Rock Grade School and Newkirk High School, graduating with the class of 1951. Luis farmed from 1950 until Feb. 12, 1953 when he entered into active duty with the US Army. He served with the military police and received an honorable discharge Feb. 1, 1955. After receiving his discharge, he returned to Newkirk and was employed by the Ponca City Police Department and later the Newkirk Police Department. On May 9, 1959 Luis and Shirley Ann Schieber were married in Newkirk. They established their home in the Newkirk area where they have since resided. John was employed by Ponca Tank Fabrication and later drove a truck for Glass Trucking. In 1967 he began employment with General Electric near Winfield and worked there until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the VFW. He enjoyed driving semi-trucks, traveling, and helping his children with all their projects. He loved spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; six sons, Charles and Lorie, Leroy and Brenda, Gary and Jennifer, Melvin and Paula, and Rex, all of Newkirk, and Lonnie and Becky of Ponca City; three daughters, Peggy and Jay Butler of Newkirk, Susan and Joe Badley of Ponca City and Donna and Bonner Wardrop of Alva; two brothers, Harold and Norma Luis of Shawnee and Gerald and Waunita Luis of Cedar Vale, KS; a sister, Helen and Ralph Gales of Ponca City; three grandsons and 15 granddaughters. He was preceded in death by a son, Marvin Luis, his parents, five brothers and four sisters. A Wake Service with recitation of the Rosary was held at 8:00 p.m. Friday in Miller-Stahl Funeral Chapel. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Ponca City with the Rev. John Michalicka as celebrant. Graveside service and burial was at 1:00 p.m. Saturday in Newkirk Cemetery.
