She was 94. The daughter of W. Edward and Mattie Delphia (Davis) Shinn, she was born Jan. 5, 1907 on her grandparents homestead east of Ponca City. That same year her family moved to Newkirk where she grew up and received her education. She graduated from Newkirk High School in 1923 as Valedictorian of her class. Her working career consisted of nine years spent with the C.R. Anthony Store in Ponca City. On May 23, 1937 she and Raymond Cree Horner were married in Newkirk. They established their first home in Newkirk where they lived until 1941 when they moved to Wichita, and her husband began working for Beech Air Craft Plant. The following year he joined the Army Air Force and she followed him where ever she could. When he received his discharge they returned to Newkirk. Mr. Horner died Feb. 16, 1979. Mrs. Horner remained in Newkirk until the last few years when she moved into her sister's home in Ponca City. Horner was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Newkirk and became an Elder of the church on Palm Sunday 1957. She was a charter member of the Newkirk Red Rose Garden Club. Horner was also one of the founders and a charter member of the Newkirk Community Historical Society, and she had served on the board from 1968 until the time of her death. Horner enjoyed flowers and knitting, and she had a great love for antiques. Her greatest passion was Kay County History. Horner is survived by two nephews and three nieces, Edith Wealand of Ponca City, Ed Shinn and Betty Coleman, both of Tulsa, Leanna Adams of Ponca City and Jack Shinn of Newkirk; a sister-in-law, Rosemary Shinn of Newkirk; her loving friend, Evelyn Swope of Ponca City; numerous great and great-great- nephews and nieces; and the many care givers who gave her such love and care over the last five years. In addition to her husband Raymond, she was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Inez Gibson, Etta Klopp, Eva Cross, Carl Shinn, Edna Hadden and Ted Shinn. The funeral was held at10:00 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30 in the Newkirk First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Walter R. Higbee officiating. Burial followed in Newkirk Cemetery under the direction of Miller-Stahl Funeral Service. Those serving as casket bearers were Jack Shinn, Sidney Gibson, Steve Gibson, Darryl Klopp, Les Witaker and Louis Coleman. Honorary bearers were Ed Shinn, Bob Shinn, Gene Smith, Enloe Baumert, Dr. E. C. Yeary, Robert Boone, Richard Sewell, Ike Glass and Jim Crossland. Memorial funds have been established with the Newkirk Historical Society and the Newkirk First Presbyterian Church.
