Bacher Lester L. Bacher, longtime Newkirk resident, died Wednesday morning, June 9, 1999 at his home in Newkirk. He was 82. The son of Lawrence L. and Opal Winona (Davidson) Bacher, he was born June 20, 1916 in a dugout east of Newkirk. He grew up in the Newkirk area and attended Stoney Point Rural School, and he graduated from Newkirk High School in 1934. On June 20, 1939 he and Margaret May Ungerman were married in Topeka. During WWII he served as a medic with the U.S. Army in Alaska. He attended Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas where he graduated with a BA degree in business administration in 1951. He retired from Tinker Air Force Base in 1971. He appeared as the Kay County Kid playing the violin for the Oklahoma Red Band, and he enjoyed repairing violins and other musical instruments. He took a boy scout troop to the 50th Scout Jamboree in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He loved all kinds of collecting and antiques, and he participated in the flea market in the Ponca City parking lot swap meet for 17 years. He is survived by his wife, Margaret of the home; one son, Donnie R. Bacher of Newkirk; one daughter, Odessa C. Bacher of Norman; two brothers, Marion Bacher of Midwest City and Gordon Bacher of Ponca City; one sister, Shirley Hollingsworth of Grove, Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Ellisha Bacher Robinson, Lawrence Bacher, Kathy Bacher Blackburn and Erica D. Martin; and seven great- grandchildren, Kyle Eagle Phillips, Brittni Allyn Phillps, Sarah Ann Robinson, Ethan Ray Robinson, Shiron Leigh Martin, Raelyn Martin and Mary Ellen Bacher. He was preceded in death by one son, Larry L. Bacher and three other infant children. A graveside service was held at 2 pm Saturday, June 12 in the Newkirk Cemetery with the Rev. Quentin Bennett, minister of the Tisdale United Methodist Church, Winfield officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Miller-Stahl Funeral Service. A memorial fund has been established with Hospice of Ponca City.
