All rights reserved http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ***************************************************** Joseph John Leven TONKAWA-Joseph John [Joe] Leven, 74, father of the Rev. Fr. Stephen A. Leven of Tonkawa and Blackwell, and a pioneer of Kay county since 1900 died Sunday morning [Jan. 7, 1940] at 9:40 o'clock in the rectory, of the St. Joseph's Catholic church in Tonkawa, after an illness of three years. The body will lie in the rectory until noon Tuesday, when it will be taken to the home of another son, Frank Leven, in Newkirk. Rosary will be read by members of the congregation of the Blackwell Catholic church, at 7:30 o'clock, Monday evening, and by the Tonkawa congregation at 8 o'clock. Tuesday evening at 8 o'clock friends of the deceased man who live in Newkirk will recite rosary at the home of Frank Leven. Funeral mass will be held Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock in the Newkirk Catholic church with the Rev. Emil Ghyssaert of Newkirk in charge of the service. Solemn high requiem mass will be sung by a priest choir at the funeral service. Pallbearers are longtime, friends of Leven, including F. J. Buellesfeld of Blackwell, who attended school with Leven when the two were young in Germany. Others are A. J. Dubach, A. A. Horinek, T. F. McGraw, E. H. Schmidt and T. J. Sheik, all of Newkirk. Leven came to the United States from Germany when he was 18 years old and settled in Illinois. He came, to Oklahoma April 25, 1900 and, settled on a farm northwest of Blackwell. He had lived in Kay County since, having made his home in Tonkawa, Ponca City, Nardin and Newkirk, at different times. He came to Tonkawa a year ago to make his home with his son, Father Leven. His wife died May 1936, a daughter, Gertrude, died in infancy and a son Otto, was killed in World War I. Survivors include three daughter's: Mrs. N. A. Larchey of Newkirk; Mrs. L. O. Gray of McPherson, Kan; Sister Mary Anselm of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Wichita, Kan; four sons; Anton and Frank Leven of Newkirk; Father Leven of Tonkawa and Joseph Leven of Forsyth, Ga.
