All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ===================================================================== ::Newkirk Cemetery--Newkirk OK This obituary was written in January 2006, compiled from information obtained from Bishop Stephen Leven archives and the National Archives. Sergeant Otto F. Leven, 25, of Newkirk, died October 1, 1918, in an army field hospital at Saizerais, France. He was drafted into the US Army on October 2, 1917 and assigned to Company E, 357th Infantry, 90th Division at Camp Travis near San Antonio, Texas. In June 1918 he deployed with the 90th Division to France. He participated with the First American Army in the St. Mihiel Offensive of September 12-16, 1918. He was wounded while on a combat night patrol on September 29th. Otto was born in Mendota, Illinois in September 1893, the oldest son of Joe and Gertrude (Conrady) Leven. His parents were immigrants from Germany, coming to America in the mid 1800s. The family moved to Kay County, Oklahoma Territory in 1906, first living near Blackwell, then, permanently settling on a farm southwest of Newkirk. At the time of his death he was survived by his parents, three sisters Katherine, Maria, and Rosa and four brothers Anton, Joseph, Stephen and Frank, all of Newkirk. A sister, Gertrude, preceded him in death. Otto's remains received temporary burial in the St. Mihiel American Cemetery and War Memorial, Thiaucourt, France. At the request of his parents, he was returned home for burial in the Newkirk Cemetery in April 1922.
