(Gerner) Collins Margaret G. Collins, longtime Newkirk resident, died Feb. 21, 2002 in Shawn Manor at Ponca City. She was 96. The daughter of Hugh and Emma (Frohberg) Gerner, she was born June 25, 1905 at Tecumseh, OK. She grew up and received her early education in Oklahoma City and graduated from Central High School in 1922. After graduation she attended Oklahoma City University and Oklahoma University where she received a bachelors degree in home economics. She then earned a masters degree in adult education from Oklahoma State University. Her employment began with teaching school in Stroud for four years. While there she helped start the first food program for school children, and she married Leslie Bowen Collins in 1930. She then taught in Wetumka for five years, followed by teaching in the soldier,s program as well as operating the cafeteria at Southwestern College in Weatherford. Her husband's job moved them to Clinton where she worked at the Chamber of Commerce. Later they moved to Fairview where they operated a grocery store for eight years. She then taught at Ringwood and later in the Cherokee school system. In 1955 she taught adult education in home extension through OSU. In 1959, they came to Newkirk where she served as the extension agent for Kay Co. She retired from the OSU Extension Service in 1970. She was named as an honorary extension agent. Mr. Collins died on Nov. 2,1972. Collins was chosen as the 1979 Newkirk Citizen of the Year. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Susannah Sunday School class and the Naomi Circle. She was also a member of the Red Rose Garden Club, P.E.O., N.A.R.F.E., Civil Service, National Education Association and Oklahoma Retired Teachers Association. She is survived by a brother, Robert V. Gerner of Bartlesville; a nephew and his wife, Dr. Robert H. and Deborah Gerner of Los Angeles, CA; a niece, Kathy Reutter of Santa Monica, CA; a grand-nephew, Robert Louis Garner of Santa Monica, CA; a grand-niece, Rebecca Sarah Gerner of Boston, MA; and her very good friend, Phyllis Clark of Ponca City. In addition to her husband Leslie, she was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Hugh, Max and Paul Gerner. A graveside service was held at 2:00 p.m. Feb. 23 in Stroud Cemetery with the Rev. James Hollifield, minister of the Newkirk First United Methodist Church officiating. A memorial service is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 in the First United Methodist Church, Newkirk. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Stahl Funeral Service. A memorial fund has been established with the Newkirk First United Methodist Church.
