Mildred Lorene Hilton

Mildred Lorene Hilton, former Newkirk resident, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001 at 
the Maplewood Nursing Center, Tulsa. She was 81.

The daughter of Elijah and Mima Ann James Ashcraft, she was born Feb.26, 1920 
in Drumright, OK. 

She grew up and received her education in Drumright, and she graduated from 
high school with the class of 1938.

After graduation she worked for an aunt in her grocery store. In 1939 she 
moved to Tulsa and worked for another aunt, also in the grocery business.

On June 30, 1940 she and Milos Hilton were married in Tulsa. They established 
their first home in Tulsa where they lived until 1962 when they moved to 
Newkirk and purchased the Pic & Pay Grocery Store. 

They operated Pic & Pay until retirement in 1979. 

She later was employed at the R&M Cafe, working there until it closed in 1985. 

Mr. Hilton died Nov. 8, 1985. 

In 1996 she moved to Edmond. 

In Oct. 2000 she entered a nursing facility in Winfield where her niece was 
employed. 

In Jan. 2001 she moved to Tulsa to be near her daughter.

She was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church, and she had been a member 
of the Newkirk Business and Professional Women. She enjoyed bowling and 
spending time with her family.

Mildred is survived by one son and his wife, Jim R. and Kimberly Hilton of 
Edmond; a daughter and her husband, Linda K. and Kenneth Grounds of Tulsa; 
one sister, Flora Nash of Ponca City; seven grandchildren, Randy Grounds, 
Joy Sue Buckler, Chrissy Hummel, Danell Knippers, Dana Cripe, Michael Hilton 
and Pam Hilton; four step grandchildren, James Helmer, Teresa Morales, 
Jessica Morales and Amanda Morales; and ten great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband Milo, she was preceded in death by one son, Danny, 
her parents, and two brothers, Ed and Hollis Ashcraft.

The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13 in Miller-Stahl 
Funeral Chapel with the Rev. David Bigger, minister of the Ponca City Free 
Will Baptist Church officiating. 

Burial followed in Newkirk Cemetery under the direction of Miller-Stahl 
Funeral Service.

Those serving as casket bearers were Randy Grounds, Michael Hilton, Jeffery 
Buckler, Danny Nash, Jerry Nash and Amsden "Mo" Mothes. Honorary bearers were 
Tommy Nash and Johnny Greenwood.
