He was 98. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Brookfield Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Steve Colaw, pastor, and Dr. C.F. Colaw, former district superintendent of the Wesleyan Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Ponca City IOOF Cemetery under the direction of Trout Funeral Home. Friends may visit at the funeral home until 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Nels Leonard Stangeland was born April 17, 1898, in Nobles County, Minn., the third child of Norwegian parents, Nils and Anna (Johnson) Stangeland. He attended rural school in the Lismore Township and later attended Augustana College in Canton, S.D., where he majored in academic business. Stangeland worked in the wheat harvest in Canada and Kansas and came south to Ponca City in 1922, where he was employed by Marland Oil Co. On March 31, 1924, he was married to Renas Wilson and the couple had celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary in July 1995. Stangeland was employed at Midwest Creamery for 18 years, then worked for Continental Oil Company in the compound and light oil pump houses. He retired from Continental in 1963. He and his wife were members of the El Dorado Campers Club for many years and traveled to many parts of the U.S. They had also traveled to Europe and in 1981, to Olen, Norway to visit the birthplace of his father. He was an active member and helped to build the present Brookfield Avenue Wesleyan Church in Ponca City. The church is frequently called "the church the Stangeland brothers built." Stangeland enjoyed fishing and raising cattle and wheat. Survivors include two daughters, Wilma Sanders of Arcadia, La., and Shirley Riggs of Ponca City; two sons, Alan and Gordon, both of Ponca City; one brother Owen Stangeland of Luverne, Minn.; a caregiver, Barbara Scott; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Renas; one daughter, Ruth Grayson; his parents; two sisters, Nora Stangeland and Sarah Aasby; and two brothers, Arthur and Melvin.
