Pernina Lorene Weatherman, longtime Newkirk minister, died unexpectedly in her home Friday, Feb. 6, 2003. She was 85. Her funeral has been scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, in the Newkirk Christ's Church with her grandson, the Rev. Steven Myers, interim pastor of St. Luke's Church of the Nazarene in Ponca City officiating. Burial will follow in Newkirk Cemetery under the direction of Miller-Stahl Funeral Service. Pernina Lorene Sullivan was born July 29, 1917, in Muldrow, the daughter of Joseph Franklin and Della Mary Davis Sullivan. In 1923 the family moved to Fort Smith, Ark., where she began her education. In 1931 the family moved to the Wynona area, and she attended school in the Barnsdall school system. Following high school graduation she attended Southwest Bible College in Enid. In 1943, she and her sister moved to Pawhuska and worked in the tent factory making hospital tents for the troops during World War II. Later, she served as an evangelist and conducted month-long vacation bible schools in Oklahoma and Texas. In 1946 she was ordained as a minister. On Feb. 24, 1946, she and Adolphus George Weatherman were married in Pawhuska and established their first home there. In 1947, her husband was ordained through the Oklahoma District Council of the Assembly of God. Their pastorate included Cloverdale and Grainola, Kansas as well as Burbank, Shidler and Skeedee, Okla. They moved to Newkirk in 1955 to pastor the Newkirk church. From 1975 until 1985 she was employed by the Arkansas City Traveler writing court news. She also served on the election board as inspector for several years. She was a member of the Assembly of God and the Newkirk Ministerial Alliance. She enjoyed gardening, tole painting and sewing, and she took great pleasure in her family. She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Sue and Jack Myers of Ponca City and Carolyn and Mike Landis of Newkirk, seven grandchildren, Sabra Myers of Las Crusis, N.M., Steven Myers and his wife Alyson of Ponca City, Dan Myers and his wife Sheri of Aurora, Ill, Regina Landis of Ponca City, Micah Mills and her husband Dustiin of Newkirk, Robyn Weatherman of Pensacola, Fla., and Danny Weatherman and his wife Alisa of Oklahoma City, and four great-grandchildren, Amber Myers, Gage Kirkendall, Kiley Mills and Emily Weatherman. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, an infant, Adolphus Weatherman and Joe Weatherman, her parents, three brothers, Wilbert, Charles and Willis Sullivan, and a sister, Beulah Mae Sullivan. Those serving as casket bearers will be Dave Turner, Jerry Evans, Charles "Stoney" Barrows, Mike McKinney, Don Larssen and Les Burke. Honorary bearers will be the men of the Assembly of God Church. A memorial fund has been established with the Newkirk Assembly of God.
