He was 69. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Grace Memorial Chapel with Pastor David Kuchta of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, presiding. Burial will be in the Ponca City IOOF Cemetery under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel. Friends may visit at the funeral home until 9 p.m. Wednesday, then the casket will be closed. Philip LaVerne Cook was born March 24, 1927, in Perkins, the son of Clarence and Mary Sharpton Rhea Cook. He attended Glencoe public schools and served with the U.S. Army from May 1945, until his honorable discharge in November 1946. On July 11, 1949, he was married to Mary A. Hubbard in Cushing and the couple established their first home in Stillwater. They moved to Ponca City in 1958, and Cook was employed as a truck driver for Conoco from 1966-81. He was recognized for his 5,000,000 mile safety record with Conoco in 1980. Cook was a member of the First Lutheran Church; a lifetime member of the Independent Oil Workers Union of Oklahoma; and a member of the VFW Post 1201, where he had served as quartermaster since 1986. He enjoyed watching baseball on television. Survivors include his wife, Mary, of the home; one son, Leon Cook of Ponca City; two daughters, Mrs. Tim (Julie) Ramey of Ponca City and Mrs. Rance (Robin) McKee of Enid; one sister, Bertha VanDeventer of Wichita, Kan.; one brother, David of Grand Island, N.Y.; two half-brothers, John Cook of Stillwater and Oliver Ernst of Agra; five grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one infant son; his parents; one sister, Virginia Kelty; and one half-brother, Oscar Ernst. Casket bearers will be Rance McKee, Matt Cook, Tim Ramey, Miles Miller, R yan Ramey and John Myers. Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Cook's name to Hospice of Ponca City, 1904 North Union, Suite 103, Ponca City, OK 74601.
