He was 73. The son of John and Creta Fay Allen Ewy, he was born March 21, 1928 in Grant County. He grew up in the Deer Creek area and attended Deer Creek schools where he graduated with the class of 1946. He then attended Oklahoma A & M University for four years. Ray entered the Army during the Korean Conflict and served as a motor pool mechanic in Anchorage, Alaska. After his discharge from active service, he returned to Kildare. He helped his parents with their farming operation and worked a number of years as a mechanic for the Buick dealership in Ponca City. On March 6, 1982 he and Josephine Marie Soulek were married in Blackwell. They made their home on his farm near Kildare. Ray helped start the Kildare Fire Department and was a volunteer for many years. He held membership with St. Francis Catholic Church of Newkirk and the state fire fighters association. He was also a past member of the American Legion. He enjoyed working on electronics devices and the mechanics of equipment and vehicles. He also enjoyed reading with a special interest in all kinds of airplanes. He is survived by three step-sons; Alfred Soulek of Oklahoma City, Jim Soulek of Perry and J. D. Soulek of Hardy; two step-daughters: Mary Bourlet of Lynchburg, MO and Pat Novy of Guthrie; a sister, Ruth Schindel of Houston, TX; nine step grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; and a nephew and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie, on April 16, 2000, and his parents. A prayer service was held at 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9 in Miller-Stahl Funeral Chapel. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10 in St. Francis Catholic Church, Newkirk with the Rev. Richard Beckman of Newkirk and the Rev. Kevin Devlin of Perry as celebrants. Graveside rites were held at 2 p.m. in St. Rose Cemetery, Perry, OK with the the Rev. Kevin Devlin officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Miller-Stahl Funeral Service. Those serving as casket bearers were Virgil Brandon, Terry Irwin, Kurte Peters, Jeff Ballagh, Steve Horinek and Daryl Vap. Honorary bearers were Robert Irwin, Jerry Vap, Dean Peters, Benny Janda, Robert Cronin and the Kildare Fire Department. Memorial funds have been established with Hospice of Ponca City and St. Francis Catholic Church.
