He was 83. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2, in the Blackwell Cemetery with the Rev. Wesley Miller of the First Church of the Nazarene in Blackwell officiating. Services are under the direction of Roberts and Son Funeral Home. Robert Kelly Beard was born Jan. 9, 1919, in Cherokee, the son of William Earl and Ruth Margerite Carter Beard. At the age of seven, he moved with his family from Cherokee (Sucker Flats) in a covered wagon, working with his father, doing various jobs with a team of horses. He worked for several years for the NYA. In 1937 he met Opal Marie Smith in Ponca City and they married on Oct. 11, 1939, in Winfield, Kan. They moved to Arkansas City and then to Blackwell. He was in charge of the furnace at Blackwell Zinc for 30 years until it closed. He then worked at various jobs until his retirement. He served in the U.S. Navy at the close of World War II. Survivors include his wife of Blackwell; four daughters, Patsy Harper of Skiatook, Mary Beard, Sherry Taylor and Sue Ward, all of Blackwell; five sons, Gary Beard of Ponca City, Kenneth Beard, Glen Beard, Jimmy Beard, and Mark "Butch" Beard, all of Blackwell; a sister, Barbara Moss of Blackwell; a brother, Earl Beard Jr. of Morrison; 33 grandchildren; and 38 great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Ronald D. Beard; two brothers, Arthur Ray "Buck" Beard and Dwight "Leo" Beard; four sisters, Earlene Epps, Dorothy Corr, Marybelle Lupton and Belva Wright. Casket bearers will be Kenneth W. Taylor, Derek L. Meadows, Tyler D. Ward, Mark E. Beard Jr., J.D. Summers, Kenneth A. Beard Jr., and Parker A. Beard. Memorial contributions may be made to Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, Alzheimers Research, in care of Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Okla. 74631.
