Swain Roy D. Swain, lifelong Ponca City resident, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at Via Christi Oklahoma Regional Medical Center. He was 71. A graveside service will be held Monday, Feb. 10, at 2 p.m. at Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Paul Graham officiating. Burial will be with military honors under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel. Roy was born Jan. 20, 1932, in Ponca City, the son of Frank and Lula Grayson Swain. He grew up here, attending Lincoln Elementary, East Junior High and Ponca City High School. Before graduating, he entered the U.S. Army and served during the Korean Conflict. On July 3, 1952, he was honorably discharged and returned to Ponca City and completed his education. On Oct. 25, 1952, he married Delores Mae Ball in Newkirk. They made their home in Ponca City and, in September 1955, he began a career with Conoco in the mailroom. Roy took a brief break from Conoco to try a job in Boulder, Colo., with the Bureau of Standards. After three months, he returned to Conoco, retiring on March 1, 1987, as a glassblower. Roy began blowing glass in 1961 and was a longtime member of the American Scientific Glassblower Society. Roy also owned two patents in glass. Additionally, from 1979 to 1981, his family owned and operated Hickman Hardware. Roy was a member of Second Baptist Church. In 1974, he joined the Ponca City Country Club and also had been a member of the Oklahoma Senior Golf Association for several years. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and attending their sports events as well as playing golf. He is survived by his wife, Delores of the home, two sons, Dirk Swain and his wife Judy, and Darren and his wife Loretta, all of Ponca City, one daughter, Lisa Foster and her husband Chris of Topeka, Kan., three brothers, Don Swain of Blackwell, Fred Swain of Tonganoxie, Kan., and Earl Swain of Euless, Texas, five grandchildren, Sarah Swain, Josh Swain, Patrick Swain, Shelby Foster and Mackenzie Foster, and numerous nieces and nephews. Honor guard will be provided by members of the Ponca City Fire Department.
