Legacy.com Graveside Service will be held at Greenlawn Southwest, 2739 Panama Lane, Bakersfield, CA, at 10:30 a.m. for Raymond G. Smith, who crossed the Great Divide on March 23, 2006 after a lengthy battle with congestive heart disease. There will be a viewing on Monday, March 27th at Doughty-Calhoun-O'Meara Mortuary located at 1100 Truxtun Ave. from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Ray, as he was known to everyone, was born on November 5th, 1948 in Ponca City Oklahoma to Raymond Glenn Smith Sr. and Helen Fisher Smith. He was 57. He moved to California in 1961 where he graduated from Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach CA. in 1967. He was a Veteran of the United States Army, serving in Germany for 2 years and proud to be an American. Ray was owner and operator of Startec Satellite for 25 years. He was a long time member of The National Rifle Association, The American Mountain Men, and the Breckenridge buckskinners reenactment group. Ray was a serial practical jokester. He had a love of the great outdoors and American history. Ray enjoyed sharing his skills and knowledge with his grandchildren. Everyone who crossed Ray's Path will remember him as a unique and giving individual. Ray is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Gemma Smith, sons Eric(Susan) Brian Smith, Alan Willis (Judy) brothers Perry(Rose) Smith, Harold Marlor, Leslie(Stephanie ) Hopper and David Hopper, grandsons Alex, Brent, and Cameron Willis Chandler Smith, granddaughter Noel Smith and loving nieces and nephews and extended family members and Tiger the cat. The family would like to thank Kaiser Permanente, all of Ray's doctors and caring staff.
