DeWhitt Stanley O. DeWhitt, longtime Ponca City resident, died Wednesday, July 10, 1996, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. He was 80. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the First Baptist Church chapel with the Rev. George Horton, retired minister, officiating. Burial will be held at Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors. Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home until 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Stanley O. DeWhitt was born May 26, 1916, in Buffalo, Kan., the son of Joseph H. and Mary L. (McClean) DeWhitt. He was married to Iris Ellen Holland on July 14, 1939, in Stillwater. The couple made their home in Yale for a short time before moving to Ponca City in 1940. DeWhitt served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific Theater during World War II. After his return to Ponca City he was employed as a route man by Howe Baking company, (later Bond Baking Company) for many years, retiring in 1978. He was then employed by H&N Sporting Goods for 12 years and later as a greeter at Wal-Mart for five years. He retired in January 1994. DeWhitt was a member of First Baptist Church and the Herald Sunday School Class. He enjoyed playing the harmonica and guitar, helping people, watching sports and telling World War II stories. Survivors include three sons, Carl of Ponca City, Ed of Harrison Township, Mich., and Curt of Jefferson, Md.; one sister, Ruth Horton of Sun City, Ariz.; one brother, Charles of Bartlesville; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife on June 7, 1995; his parents, four brothers and four sisters. Casket bearers will be Richard Hemken, Dr. Don Potter, Jim Dressen, and Tom Skaggs. Honorary bearers will be members of the Herald Sunday School Class. Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, Building Fund, 218 South Sixth Street, Ponca City, OK 74601.
