He was 66. The son of William Henry and Ruby Belle (Noteware) Lewis, he was born Nov. 5, 1933 at Kildare. He attended school in Tipton Rural School, in the Uncas school, in Monticello, LA, and in Newkirk. In the early 1950's he began driving a truck for Joe Butler. His later employment included pipeline work, truck driving for Mauer Shirley Trucking, later known as B&H Trucking in Arkansas City, and Doonan Truck and Equipment in Great Bend, KS. In the 1960's he worked in McPherson, KS for Thunderbird Sales. On Oct. 9, 1965 he and Ellen Joan Baker were married at McPherson, and they made their home there until 1967 when they moved to Newkirk. He operated his own business, Tommy Lewis Trucking. In 1976 it became T. Lewis, Inc. and dealed in pallets and recycling. He retired in 1997. Lewis attended the Newkirk Nazarene Church, and he enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He and Ellen had been members of the Newkirk RangeRiders, and he had been instrumental in getting a rodeo started in Newkirk. In his early years he had been a rodeo clown. He is survived by his wife Ellen of the home; one son, Hank Lewis of Newkirk; one daughter, Stephanie Lewis of Shawnee, KS; a sister, Bonnie Mapel of Peckham; and numerous nephews and nieces. Lewis was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Donald. The funeral was held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, Aug. 25 in the Newkirk First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lloyd Hughes, minister of the Newkirk Nazarene Church officiating and assisted by Danny W. Cornish, minister of the Newkirk Church of Christ. Burial followed in Newkirk Cemetery under the direction of Miller-Stahl Funeral Service. Those serving as casket bearers were Kirk Brown, Raleigh Colburn, Ernie Conley, Larry Koochel, Amsden Mothes and George Wilhelm. Honorary bearers were Jay Butler, Mickey Cantwell, Charles Don Coe, Ike Glass, Merle Goddard, Joe Leaming, Steen Lister, Bill Olsen, J.B. Olsen, Gary Potter, Gene Pulley, Stanley Schwartz Don Stephens, Bobby Swopes, Donnie Williamson, Don Wolfe and Rick Worley. A memorial fund has been established with the Nazarene Compassionate Ministry.
