All rights reserved http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ***************************************************** Betty Joan Turner Betty Joan Turner, longtime Newkirk resident, died early Saturday morning, July 20, 2002 at her home. She was 71. The daughter of John Edward and Ethel (Little) Hasselbring, she was born Nov. 7, 1930 in Braman. When she was a year old the family moved to Estancia, NM where they lived until 1939 when they moved to Newkirk, and she attended Newkirk schools. On April 19, 1947 she and Jack Annis Turner were married in Arkansas City. They established their first home in Arkansas City, moving later to various locations around the country where her husband's work with the railroad took them. In 1954 they moved to Guthrie, OK, and Mr. Turner died July 19, 1956. After his death she moved their family to Newkirk where she has since resided. She was employed by IGA Grocery for 29 years. Betty was a member of the First Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening, her yard and flowers, reading and working crossword puzzles. She is survived by three sons and their wives, David and Linda Turner of Newkirk, Jack and Diana Turner of Ponca City and Richard and Brenda Turner of Belle Plain, KS; one daughter and her husband, Barbara and Bob Lower of Mustang, OK; two brothers and their wives, Elmer and Martha Hasselbring of Newkirk, and Dannie and Bonnie Hasselbring of Peckham; four sisters and their husbands, Colleen and Roy Pappan of Stillwater, Lucille and Billy Kay, Patsy and Vernon Rowe and Helen and Dennis Meloy, all of Newkirk; 12 grandchildren, Denise Magg, Gail Horinek, Zachary Turner, Jay Turner, Nichalas Turner, Jack Turner, Caleb Turner and Lucas Turner, Michael Turner, Max Turner, Hope Turner, Benjamin Turner; three step grandchildren, Jeremy Runyan, Jennifer Collins, Justin Runyan; and three great-grandchildren, Justin Magg, Matthew Magg and Michael Magg. In addition to her husband Jack, she is preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Merlin Hasselbring and Jon Hasselbring. The funeral was held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 23 at the Newkirk Christ's Church with the Rev. Craig Ortwein officiating. Burial followed in Riverview Cemetery, Arkansas City under the direction of Miller-Stahl Funeral Service. Grandchildren serving as casket bearers were Denise Magg, Gail Horinek, Zachary Turner, Jay Turner, Nichalas Turner, Jack Turner, Caleb Turner and Lucas Turner. Grandchildren serving as honorary bearers were Michael Turner, Max Turner, Hope Turner, Benjamin Turner, Jeremy Runyan, Jennifer Collins, Justin Runyan, . A memorial fund has been established with Hospice of Ponca City. Contributions may be made through Eastman National Bank, Box 468, Newkirk. ---
