(Cowen) McCready LAMONT - Verda L. McCready, lifelong Lamont resident, died Wednesday, July 10, 1996, in the McAfee Living Center at Hillcrest Manor Nursing Home in Blackwell. She was 100. The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Lamont First Christian Church with the Rev. Ruth Tipps, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Lamont Cemetery under the direction of McCafferty-Bolick Funeral Home of Tonkawa. Verda (Cowen) McCready was born July 7, 1896, four miles east of Lamont, the daughter of John B. and Elizabeth (Hombrighausen) Cowen. She attended Rural Liberty School, east of Lamont, and graduated from Lamont High School in 1918. She was employed by the Lamont Rural Telephone Company for a time. On June 28, 1924, she was married to Dick McCready, and the couple established their home and farmed in the Lamont area. Mrs. McCready moved into Lamont in 1969. She was a member of the Lamont Christian Church, where she served on the board and as a Sunday School teacher. Mrs. McCready was a 58-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was very active in community affairs. She moved to Hillcrest Manor Nursing Home in Blackwell on Sept. 1, 1990. Survivors include 18 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband on June 3, 1963; her parents; five brothers and three sisters; and two nieces.
