Hodges Vern A. Hodges, longtime Ponca City resident, died Sunday, July 14, 1996, at the Shawn Manor Nursing Center. He was 90. The funeral will be held graveside at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Ponca City IOOF Cemetery, with the Rev. Larry Heslip, First Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel. Friends and family may visit at the funeral home until 1 p.m. Wednesday. Vern A. Hodges was born Jan. 2, 1906, in Braman, the son of Ben and Effie (Chambers) Hodges. He received his education in the Braman School and at Blackwell High School. On July 16, 1926, he was married to Irene Davis in Wichita, Kan., and the couple would have celebrated 70 years of marriage, today. They established their first home in Blackwell, where Hodges farmed and was employed at the Blackwell Smelter. He was later employed at Conoco as an insulator then as custodian at the First Christian Church for 17 years before retirement in the late 1970s. He was a member of the First Christian Church and enjoyed golf, travel, keeping a beautiful yard, and visiting with friends. Survivors include his wife, Irene, of the home; one daughter, Patty Wallace of Ponca City; two sons, Grant of Ponca City and Gary of Naushon Island, Mass.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by one infant son, Jerry; his parents; and one sister, Mamie. Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Hodges' name to Hospice of Ponca City, 1904 North Union, Suite 103, Ponca City, OK 74601.
