He was 80. The son of Owen Earle and Mary Angela (Hilmes) Hanon, he was born Sept. 5, 1919 in Carlyle, IL. His mother died when he was a baby and his father later remarried. Walter was four when his father died. He and his sister Berniece lived with their grandparents, Owen and Alta Hanon in Newkirk. They were later joined by their sister Winifred. He attended school in Newkirk, and after leaving school he helped his grandfather on the farm. On May 27, 1942 Hanon entered the U. S. Army and served with Company C 126th Engineer Combat Battalion in Central Europe. He was serving in Germany at the end of WWII. He was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, the EAME Theater Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal. He received his discharge Nov. 10, 1945. After returning from the service, Hanon worked in Newkirk at various jobs. He worked for a time as custodian of the First Baptist Church. Hanon had been a member of the First Baptist Church. He enjoyed playing the violin and woodworking. He is survived by two sisters, Winifred Gerkin of Sacramento, CA and Berniece Traynor of San Bernadino, CA; one half sister, Katherine Kelly of Dubuque, IA; 13 nephews and nieces, Janet Gurkin of San Francisco, Robert Gerkin of Long Beach, CA, Gary Traynor of San Bernadino, Dick Traynor of Elko, NV, Steve Traynor of San Gabriel, CA, Harold Kelly, Frank Kelly, Ronald Kelly, Steve Kelly, Bill Kelly, Beverly Curran, Judy Horkheimer and Joanne Hogan, all of Dubuque; and numerous great nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, his half sister, Audrey, and one nephew, Jerry Kelly. There was no funeral service. Mr. Hanon was buried in Newkirk Cemetery on Tuesday, Aug. 22.
