Scruggs, age 68, after a long illness, passed over from the Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson to the loving arms of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Born in Dover, Oklahoma to Robert Thomas House & Mary-Amy Isabella Phillips-House. The House family moved from Oklahoma to Wichita, Kansas in 1947. She graduated from North High School in 1957. Ora worked with the elderly which sparked her interest in the care of Senior Citizens and volunteering in her community. Ora married Ivy Lee Scruggs, an Air Force Military Man in 1958. They traveled the world, with their 3 children to such places as Hong Kong, Japan, Okinawa, California, Hawaii, New York, Washington and Kansas. The Scruggs family retired from the military to Modesto, CA in 1975. While raising 3 children, Ora continued her education by graduating from Modesto Junior College with an Associate in Arts Degree in 1981 and from California State College, Stanislaus, receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Sciences in 1983. She was an active member of the Tyler Family Association. Her involvement with the aid to spouses of military personnel guided her path to Community Activist. Ora lived is Stanislaus County over 35 years, belonging to many organizations and volunteered to help the downtrodden. She assisted various minority peoples. She was an advocate for the elderly and disabled. Ora served on the following organizations while living in the Modesto area: The California State Democratic Committee & Stanislaus County Democratic Central Committee, 25th & 26th Assembly District Democratic Committee, NAACP and the Black Cauesus, where she was introduced to many Assemblymen, Senators, Congressmen, Mayors & Legislators. She founded and was the president of the Minority Women's Network, established the Minority Center in Modesto. She was the president of the Stanislaus Chapter #37 California Association for the Physically handicapped, a member of the Modesto Housing & Community Development Committee, volunteered with the Block Grants Committee, Salvation Army, United Way, Commission of Aging and most recently she served on the In-Home Supportive Services Advisory Committee to the Board of Supervisors. Her parents & seven sisters preceded her in death. She is cherished by many and will be loved forever in our hearts by her 3 Children: Patricia A. Scruggs, Ivy L. Scruggs & Sidney B. Scruggs, of Modesto, CA; 5 Grandchildren: Jordan M. Scruggs of Arizona, Nikkole L. Scruggs & Scott T. Scruggs of Oakdale, CA, Aja D. Hutcherson & Zoei L. Hutcherson of Modesto, CA; 4 Sisters: Ardelia E. Ballard, Virgie L. Logan, Sonya M. House & Gaynell N. Ross, all of Wichita, Kansas; Cousins: Brenda Clay Blumfield-Ross of Vallejo, Benny Clay of Nevada, Eugene House of Los Angelis and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many, many, many friends who journeyed with her through out her life.
