All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ===================================================================== Mark Eugene Grimes, a long time Borger resident and member of pioneer family, died in Pampa, Texas on August 22, 2000 of Altzeimers Disease. Mark Eugene Grimes was born on July 25, 1917, in Kingfisher, Oklahoma on land his father homesteaded during the Oklahoma land run in which the family settled most of the county of Kingfisher. His father was James Pinkston Grimes known as Jim "R" Grimes born May 31, 1873 and his mother, Emily Jane Stevenson Grimes , was of the John W. Stevenson/Cooper family of Gentry county, MO. and her birth date was December 21, 1878. Mark Eugene Grimes was married to Ellena Farris Gullett Grimes on December 14, 1939 in Pawhuska, Okla. Osage County. His wife of 61 years survives him and is in a Pampa managed care center , with her home in Borger, Texas. He was able to care for her and for himself up until a few months ago. Mark Grimes is survived by only one brother of a family of ten births. His siblings who have gone before him are: Jane Sumpter Casebeer, Lucinda Jech, Annabelle Hutchinson Henderson, Eva Mae Hubby, Flora Turner, John Winston Grimes, Marion Grimes and a infant brother, James William Grimes. The surviving sibling is Laddy J. Grimes of Norman, Oklahoma. He is survived also by his two sons , Melvin Eugene Grimes and his wife, Judy Hugg Grimes of Yorba Linda, California, and Harold Joe Grimes an employee of Phillips Petroleum Pipe line in Borger, and his wife, Annie Thorson Brunson Grimes , of Pampa and East Texas. Mr. Grimes has the two sons, seven grandchildren including, Natalie Palmer of Anaheim Hills CA. Melanie Barden of Whittier, California, Stephanie Lehner of Victorville, California and Mark Eugene Grimes of Whittier, California, also Julie and Leigh Ann and James Grimes of Borger, Texas and 24 great grandchildren and still counting. Mr. Grimes was a ranch forman on a cattle ranch in Kansas during World War II and came to work in Borger for Phillips Petroleum in the Plains Plant at Bunavista in 1950. Mark was also a hard working and exceptional craftsman, a carpenter , who founded his own construction company in Borger and worked many years on remodel and new construction on homes of area residents. He received his high school certificate of graduation after being an adult and was very proud of that accomplishment. He was a crack shot with a shotgun or rifle and supplied many a table with quail, pheasant, and ducks along with his old bird dog ," Freckles." Mark Eugene Grimes along with his wife, Ellena were part of the original founding familys of the Bunavista Baptist Church of Bunavista, Texas and are currently members of the Keeler Baptist Church of Borger, Tx, having lived many years on Union Avenue in Keeler addition the family home is now in the old Huber addition of South Borger on Wisconsin street. He was first a husband, father, Baptist, and Democrat in that order.He traveled not far from his home in Okla. and Texas , and was always available for neighbors or friends who needed a helping hand. He was always ready for a good laugh and could manage to get in a few, great whopping fish stories . He was one of the last of the old time cowboys and the west will not be the same without him.
