He was born June 27, 1929, to Harry and Beatrice (Crider) Hiler in Pottersville, Missouri. On June 2, 1951, he married Joann Hall at Crescent, Oklahoma. Gerald started to work for Western Light and Telephone Co. in West Plains, Missouri, in August 1949, and worked for them until they were acquired by Pioneer Telephone Co. in February 1958. After working for Pioneer for 36 years, he retired in May 1994. He enjoyed his work very much and strived to do the best job he could. In his younger years, he worked for Farmers Exchange in West Plains as a truck driver, as well as working for Howell County R.E.A When he was about 18 years old, he worked for Bill Monroe, the Father of Bluegrass music, putting up the tent for tent shows. He fondly recalled memories from those days. He was also involved in the community, being honored as Citizen of the Year in 1998, by the Chamber of Commerce, and would do anything for his friends and neighbors. He was an active member of Ind. Order of Odd Fellows and held various offices. He is preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Beatrice Hiler, and one granddaughter, Amanda Harris. He is survived by his wife, Joann, of the home; seven daughters, Kathy Sylva, Bonnie Hire and husband Jerry, Louise Evans, Anita Carter and husband Warren, Geraldine Harris, Susan Hiler and Patsy Leck and husband Karl. They also have 14 grandchildren, Kari Austin and Shelly Stilwell, Brandon and Justin Hire, Doug Evans, Brett, Stephanie, Crystal and Trey Carter, D.J. and Brandi Harris, and Clifford, Chontae and Stacey Hiler; four great- grandchildren; one sister, Helen (Hiler) Gannon and brother-in-law Jimmy of West Plains, Missouri, two nieces, one nephew, two aunts, Mildred Frazier of Illinois and Velmas Caplinger of West Plains, Missouri, and a host of cousins. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, and we look forward to seeing him in Heaven. Funeral services were held Thursday at Council Road Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, under direction of Guardian West Funeral Homes. She was born Aug. 13, 1926, in Shawnee. She graduated from Shawnee High School. She married Paul McCullough on Aug. 18, 1947. She served on the nursing staff at Watonga and Pauls Valley hospitals for 13 years and as a camp nurse at Camp Hudgens each summer for 18 years. Her hobby was bowling. She served as league secretary for two leagues. Survivors include her husband, Paul; two daughters, Jeanne Willis and husband Phil and Paula Williams and husband Rick; four brothers, Ken Myers, Harry Myers, Art Myers and David Myers; four grandchildren, and five great- grandchildren. --- Max Major Pappe: P100 (((Photo))) Max Major Pappe, 84, of Cathedral City, Calif. died at 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at Amdal Residential Care in Rancho Mirage, where he has resided since August of 2001 with his wife of 58 years. He was admired and respected by all who knew him. A native of Kingfisher, Okla., he moved to Downey, Calif. in 1948 with his wife, the former Mildred Wittrock from Okarche, Okla. and three children. He retired to Cathedral City in 1971. The Pappe family was well-known in Kingfisher, his grandfather, Richard Pappe Sr., being among the first settlers there in the opening of Oklahoma Territory in April 1889. He made his living in the flooring business and was a full partner in Floor Fashions Inc., in Fullerton, Calif. In retirement, he pursued his life's passions as an inventor and ballroom dancer and was an active amateur radio operator, using the call sign KA6EKV. He was a 30-year member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks of the USA, Lodge No. 1905 in Cathedral City. At the age of 16, he enlisted in the National Guard in Oklahoma, serving for six years. In 1940, he entered the regular Army, serving six more years in Panama and the Philippines as Unit Commander, Field Artillery, and rising to the rank of Master Sergeant. He was commissioned as Second Lieutenant after completing Officers Candidate School and was later promoted to First Lieutenant upon his honorable discharge in 1946. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Pappe and Violet Major Pappe of Kingfisher, and one brother, Charles Pappe of Oklahoma City, Okla. In addition to his widow, Mildred, of the home, he is survived by three children and their spouses, Donald and Judy Pappe of Whittier, Marilyn and Don Davis of Cathedral City, and Elaine and Robert Lawson of Laguna Beach, Calif.; five grandchildren, Deborah Jones, Kimberly Cheney, Robert Willis, Angela and Jessica Lawson; and five great-grandchildren; one sister, Louise Altizer of Kingfisher and a nephew, Charles Altizer of Oklahoma City, Okla., and numberous nieces and nephews. Private memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 9, in Cathedral City. --- Donald Ray "Buck" Dennis: D520 (((Photo))) Donald Ray "Buck" Dennis, 54, of Kingfisher died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, in Oklahoma City. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 2, at the Faith and Vision Church in Kingfisher with Brother R.L. Miller officiating. Services are under direction of Sanders Funeral Service of Kingfisher. He will be cremated. He was born July 27, 1947 in Stafford, Ariz. He was adopted by Gayle Young of Salt Plains and the late Dewel B. Dennis. He lived in Enid and Kingfisher most of his life. He joined the U.S. Army for a short time. He then became a cross-country truck driver and roofer. Burial followed at Calvary Cemetery, under direction of Cordry-Gritz Funeral Home of Hennessey. She was born Dec. 6, 1905, near Waukomis to Joseph and Mary Karel Chermack. She was a 1928 graduate of Oklahoma A&M. She married Irvin Stalder on Oct. 16, 1935. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and Altar Society. Survivors include her husband, Irvin and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters. --- Homer D. Brooks: B620 Homer D. Brooks, 82, longtime resident of Watonga, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Watonga First Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Larry Hall officiating. Burial will follow in the IOOF Cemetery in Watonga, under direction of Wilkinson Mortuary in Watonga. He was born July 2, 1919, on a farm on Kizzy's Hill, six miles east of Hitchcock to Ralph Earl and Helen Brummal Brooks. He married Dorothy Mae Keeney May 4, 1944, at Watonga. He attended school at Hitchcock and Watonga. He was employed by the United States Gypsum Co. for 10 years, worked as a carpenter foreman for Allison and Haney Construction, served as an insurance agent for Lincoln Income Life and Old American Insurance companies, coordinated an energy and housing program for Opportunities, Inc., and drove a bus for Hitchcock and Watonga schools. He served in the National Guard and the U.S. Army for nearly seven years, where he earned the rank of staff sergeant and served as chief of detail. He participated in battles and campaigns in Normandy, Rhineland, Northern France and Central Europe. He received a Good Conduct Medal, EAME Service Ribbon, American Defense Service Ribbon and four Bronze Service Stars. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was present at the liberation of Dachau Concentration Camp. He was a member of the Watonga First Church of the Nazarene for 48 years, where he was a Sunday school teacher, superintendent, board member and member of the senior citizen's group "Prime Timers" for several years. He was also a member of the Watonga American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. His hobbies included inventing things, cooking and writing poetry. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of the home; one son, Jerry Brooks and wife Kathleen of Hitchcock; two daughters, Darla and Monta Brooks, both of Watonga; two brothers, Lu Brooks of Palm Dale, Calif. and Cleamon Brooks of Stanton, Calif.; one brother-in-law, Larry Keeny of Watonga; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Barbara Brooks, Juanita Wiles and Eleanor Fleming, and one brother, Russell Brooks. --- Sarah Rosalie Burgess: B622 Sarah Rosalie Burgess, 81, of Cashion died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at Kingfisher Regional Hospital. She was a member of the Cashion Christian Church. Survivors include one son, Robert L. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Lena Short. --- Lillian Marie Schweitzer: S326 Lillian Marie Schweitzer, 82, longtime resident of Okarche, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at Ranchwood Nursing Center in Yukon. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Holy Trinity Church in Okarche with Rev. Ed Weisenburger officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Trinity Cemetery, under direction of Huber-Benson Funeral Home of El Reno. She was born June 19, 1919, at Waurika to Robert and Myrtle Harville Williams. She married Lawrence G. Schweitzer on July 3,1937. He preceded her in death on May 10, 1990. She was a homemaker and a member of the Holy Trinity Church and Catholic Daughters of the Americas. Survivors include one son, Norvin Schweitzer of Yukon; three sisters, Doris Schweitzer and Thelma Blum, both of El Reno, and Ruth Yost of Lomega; seven grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Joan Rother, one brother, Bobby Williams and one sister, Jinx Shrum. --- Eddie Wetwiska: W323 Eddie Wetwiska, 54, longtime resident of the Center of Family Love in Okarche, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002. A memorial service was held Friday at the Center of Family Love in Okarche, under direction of Guardian West Funeral Home. He was born Sept. 14, 1947, to Ed and Evalyn Wetwiska. He was employed at Too Delicious in Kingfisher. His hobbies were listening to music, making flower arrangements and he was an avid OU fan. Survivors include two sister, Carol D. She died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, in Kennewick. A memorial service was held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Kennewick on March 2. She was born Dec. 1, 1931, in Kingfisher to Elmer and Louise Hasley. She married Gerald Sturdefant on July 24, 1949. He preceded her in death on Sept. 11, 1968. She grew up in the Cashion community and graduated from Cashion High School in 1949. They moved to Kennewick in 1952. She was a member of the Kennewick congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. Survivors include Jerry Sturdefant of Anacortes, Wash., John Sturdefant of Kennewick, Karen Riggins, Arthur Sturdefant of Kennewick and Anita Butler, all of Kennewick, Deborah Sturdefant of Portland, Ore., and one sister, Betty Rysted of Oklahoma City. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Johnnie Hasley, and one sister, Ilene Nakvinda. --- Laten Lee Anderson: A536 Laten Lee Anderson, 79, of Middletown, Ohio, formerly of Crescent, died March 3, 2002, in Middletown. Funeral services were held Friday at the Abernathy Funeral Chapel in Crescent with Pastor Mark LeMarr officiating. Burial followed in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Douglas, under direction of Abernathy Funeral Home of Crescent. He was born Nov. 25, 1922, in Douglas to Reuben and Margaret Handel Anderson. He was a WWII veteran, serving in the U.S. Army. He owned and operated Precision Plastic Co. He was a member of the American Legion Post NO. 218 and the VFW. Survivors include one son, Max Anderson and wife Loraine of Glorieta, N.M.; one daughter, Kathy Carpenter of Ulysses, Kan.; two sisters, Betty Lou Troyer of Crescent and Opal Adams of Cashion; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. "Jack" Manoske, 79, lifelong resident of Okarche, died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at Kingfisher Regional Hospital. A graveside service was set for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Holy Trinity Cemetery with Rev. Edward Weisenburger officiating. He was born Dec. 24, 1922, in Okarche to Joe and Ann Louis Manoske. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the Pacific Theater. He was a general contractor in residential construction, building many homes in the Okarche area. He was member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Okarche. Survivors include one sister, Mary Witchurch of Brentwood, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. --- Jewel Dean Lennox Tatum: T350 (((Photo))) Jewel Dean "Geraldine" Lennox Tatum, 61, of Kingfisher died Wednesday, March 6, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Kingfisher First Baptist Church with Rev. Rickie Jacobs officiating. Burial will follow in Kingfisher Cemetery, under direction of Russworm Funeral Home of Watonga. She was born June 25, 1940, in Hugo to Alfred and Vera Lennox. She married Melvin Tatum in 1957 in Kingfisher. He preceded her in death on May 15, 2001. She attended school in Grant and was active in sports. She moved to Oklahoma City at an early age and then moved to Kingfisher to help her father with his business, the R and R Cafe. She also worked at the Patio Restaurant and the Cattleman's Cafe. Survivors include three sons, Ronald Tatum of Oklahoma City, Marvin Tatum of Detroit, Mich., and Thomas Tatum of Kingfisher; seven daughters, Gwen Burdine of Edmond, Melvina Tatum of Oklahoma City, Gloria Dewberry of Lancaster, Calif., Melody Austin of Dallas, Texas, Shealise Smith of Kingfisher, Sharon Tatum of Atlanta, Ga., and Rhonda Tatum of Olathe, Kan.; three sisters, Norma Lennox, Magdalene Johnson and Patricia Dejear, all of Oklahoma City; six brothers, Ray Lennox of Tulsa, Eugene Lennox of Enid, Paul Lennox, Lee Lennox, Joe Lennox and Johnny Lennox, all of Oklahoma City; 28 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the New Home Cemetery at Dover, under direction of Broadway Mortuary in Wichita. He was born Dec. 15, 1908, in Lookeba to James and Minnie Dupy McCully. He was employed as a sand pump operator for Dolese Bros. Survivors include his wife, Fern of the home; two sons, Larry McCully of Naples, Fla. and Gael McCully of Wichita; one daughter, Sherry Allton of Abilene, Kan.; nine grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Ivan A. She was born Oct. 13, 1929, in Covington to William Edward and Virginia Ruth Frank Hickey. She was a member of the Catholic Church. Funeral services were held Wednesday in Yukon followed by burial in Me- morial Park Cemetery in Oklahoma City. She was born Oct. 30, 1904, in Kingfisher County to Henry and Sylvia Walker Major. She attended elementary classes at Cooper School, then graduated from Kingfisher High School. She received a degree in elementary education from Central State Teachers College in Edmond, and taught school for 27 years in Deer Creek and Oklahoma City. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Yukon where she taught a Sunday School class for 50 years. She moved to Spanish Cove Retirement Villiag Aug. 1, 1987. Survivors include one son, Wendell L. Davenport and wife Faye of Oklahoma City; one brother, Gilbert Major and his wife Mary of Kingfisher; one sister, Irma Polsley of Littleton, Colo.; five granddaughters and their husbands; eight great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sheldon, in 1984, and seven brothers and sisters. --- Helen Jane Schaefer: S160 Helen Jane Schaefer, 54, of Okarche died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Enid. Funeral services were set for 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Holy Trinity Catholic Church at Okarche with Rev. Edward Weisenburger officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Trinity Cemetery. She was born Jan. 2, 1948, in El Reno to Frank and Katherine Hoehner Schaefer. She lived most of her life in Enid. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Survivors include six sisters, Loretta Vogt of Okarche, Mildred Wolf and Kathleen Kay Spinks, both of Oklahoma City, Rita Baumann of Yukon, Agnes Boeckman of Okeene and Ruth Boeckman of Amarillo, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Lawrence Schaefer, and one sister, Gertrude Lodes. --- C.L. "Mickey" Hamil: H540 C.L. "Mickey" Hamil, 80, of Enid died Saturday, March 9, 2002, at St. Mary's Regional Hospital in Enid. A memorial service was held Friday with Rev. George Givens of the Omega Baptist Church officiating. He was born Sept. 6, 1921, in Loyal to Grover C. and Essie Ann Hoskins Hamil. He married Sue Wehrenberg on Aug. 28, 1939. They moved to Bethany. He was a 1937 graduate of Loyal High School. He was employed at Steffan's Ice Cream and later became a sales manager and moved to Shawnee. During this time, he received his pilot's license. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He moved to California and went into sales. He also resided in Salinas, Calif., Monterey, Calif., and San Jose, Calif. He was a salesman for Carnation Milk Co. He moved to Enid in 1960 and worked in the oil business. Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Cassell of San Diego, Calif., and Sharon Piazza of San Jose: two sons, Micheal Hamil and Dennis Hamil, both of Enid; one sister, Cloye Kelchner and husband Ellsworth of Enid; eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. --- Elizabeth A. Hoggan: H250 Word has been received of the death of Elizabeth A. Goddard Hoggan, 65, of Las Vegas, Nev., who died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002. A private service was held at Davis Paradise Valley Funeral Home. She was born May 12, 1936, in Anadarko to Frank and Pansy Roberson Pendley. They moved to Kingfisher when she was a young girl. She moved to Las Vegas in 1966. She was employed as a cocktail waitress for hotels. Survivors include her husband, Jack of the home; one daughter, Rae Lynn Butts of Henderson, Nev.; one brother, Ed Pendley of Clinton, and one sister, Ginny Tate of Enid. --- Marvin Vernon Boutwell: B340 Marvin Vernon Boutwell, 48, of Kingfisher died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at his home. She was born July 21, 1921, in Hennessey to Ceph and Lucille Needham Choate. She was a 1939 graduate of Lacey High School. She attended nursing school in 1939 receiving her degree in 1943 as a registered nurse. She served in several hospitals as nursing supervisor until her retirement in 1968. She was a member of the American Nursing Association and the Oklahoma Nursing Association. Castonguay: C235 Harold L. Castonguay, 69, of Kingfisher, died Monday, March 25, 2002, at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City. Burial will be in Kingfisher Cemetery, under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home. Harold was born October 8, 1932, at home in Altona, Oklahoma, to Abe and Mae (Schweitzer) Castonguay. Harold was a farmer/rancher his entire life in the Altona community, making his home in Kingfisher. Harold graduated high school at Omega, Oklahoma, in 1950. He was drafted to the Navy in 1955 and spent two years serving his country from 39 foreign ports-of-call. Harold did custom harvesting for several years in Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Colorado and Nebraska. Harold married Maxine McKinley of Scott City, Kansas, in 1961. She pre- ceded him in death in November 1991. Harold married Carol Jean Thom of Wichita, Kansas, on Januray 1, 1993. Survivors include his wife, Carol Jean of the home in Kingfisher; his mother, Mae Castonguay of Kingfisher, and his brother, Don Castonguay and wife Roberta of Kingfisher. Slack: S420 Word has been received of the death of William A. "Bill" Slack, 72, of Enid on Sunday, March 17, 2002, at the Methodist Home in Enid. At his request, he was cremated and placed in the family cemetery plot in the Kingfisher Cemetery. He was born June 17, 1929, in Kingfisher to Clarence and Edith Yager Slack. He was a 1947 graduate of Kingfisher High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1952 and served for seven years with service in Korea and Germany, attaining the rank of sergeant. Upon his discharge, he was employed in the loan department of a New York City bank for several years before moving to Niagara, Wis., where he worked for the Niagara Telephone Co. until his retirement in 1994. He moved to Midwest City and lived there until February 2000, at which time he moved to Enid. His hobbies were fishing, camping and football. Survivors include two sisters, Maxine Turra of White City, Ore., and Maurine Holt of McLoud; two brothers, Kenneth Slack of Enid and Marion Slack of Minneapolis, Minn., and several nieces and nephews. She married Prem Jech in 1922 in El Reno. He preceded her in death in 1978. She was a member of the Kingfisher Christian Church, Home Demonstration Club and Quilting Club. She was born July 9, 1904, in Loyal to W.B. and Minnie Wehrenberg. She married R.F. Rudy Staude on Sept. 19, 1925, in Loyal. Survivors include two sons, Cliff Staude of Oklahoma City and Wilbur Staude of Loyal; two brothers, Walt Wehrenberg and Lesly Wehrenberg, both of Loyal; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, and five great- great-grandchildren.
