Mrs. Chitty was born on May 27, 1917, in Roosevelt, to Edward Wiley and Lydia Russell Edwards. She lived in that vicinity until graduating from Warren High School in 1935. She married Carl Hamilton Chitty on Nov. 30, 1935. One son, Carl Edwin Chitty, was born in 1937. They raised their son in the Blair community and also lived in Amarillo, Texas, and California. Borger, Texas, was home for some time, but home became Canyon, Texas, in 1970. After retiring from the former West Texas State University in 1981, she lived in Altus. Mrs. Chitty's legacy was sharing with others. Although she worked most of her life, she always made time for crafts. She made and gave away numerous frog pillows, crocheted afghans, hand-pieced quilts, and other hand- crafted items. Her passion was cooking. Mrs. Chitty was known for her homemade breads, desserts, casseroles and home-canned items. Many hours were spent preparing large meals for groups of her "college kids," friends and family. Mrs. Chitty was always a faithful church member. Her church homes included the First Baptist Churches of Blair, Canyon, and Borger as well as the Primitive Baptist Church. She last attended Emmanuel Baptist Church in Altus. Survivors include her son, Carl E. "Cotton" Chitty of Duncan, formerly of Vernon, Texas; four grandchildren, Monty Chitty of Yuba City, Calif., Bryan Wayne of Alexandria, Va., and Melissa and Wyatt Smith of Duncan; and three great-grandchildren, Derek, Megan and Brandon Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and brothers. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Kiowa County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/kiowa/kiowa.html
