Services were held 10 a.m. April 23, 2003 at McAlester First Baptist Church with the Dr. Randall Adams officiating. Interment will be in the Masonic section of Oak Hill Cemetery under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service in McAlester. Pallbearers included Senator Gene Stipe, Ray Gattenby, Clyde Stokes, David Mitchell, Clyde Heathcock and Neal Lefler. Marguerite was born June 29, 1900 in Louisville, Kentucky to Joseph H. and Mollie Adair Bowles. She and her family came to Oklahoma from Kentucky in 1912 by train. Her father was a Baptist Minister and she lived in several communities across Oklahoma before moving to McAlester. Marguerite began her teaching career in Fargo, Okla., very early in life, and continued her teaching career while earning her teacher's degree in Weatherford, Okla. She completed her education in 1932 and she married Collins P. "Plowboy" Edwards in Hobart, Okla., on June 29, 1934, and moved to McAlester in 1943. She had a teaching career for over 50 years, 25 of those years were spent teaching at Edmond Doyle Elementary School in McAlester. She was an active member for 60 years at the First Baptist Church of McAlester and served as a Sunday school teacher in several departments. She was also the Sunday School director of the Senior Adult Department and a member of the Church Choir for many years. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 149 for over 50 years, a member of the D.A.R. (Daughters of American Revolution) and a member of the Oklahoma Retired Teachers organization. Marguerite Edwards was a friend and mentor to many students and young teachers who learned under her teaching. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Joe H. and Linda Edwards of Bartlesville; a grandson, Wade Collins Edwards of Oxnard, Calif.; a sister, Mollie Lee Beresford and family of Denver, Colo.; five nieces and nephews, Virginia Lee Beresford and family of Denver, Colo., Lillian Taylor and family of Ponca City, Okla., Joann Smith and family of Tulsa, Brosha Gattenby of McAlester, Darrieux Morgan of Rock Hill, S.C., and Denver Edwards of Hobart, Okla.; five grand-nephews and one grand-niece; a sister-in-law, Opal Edwards, of Hobart, Okla.; two cousins, Donald Bowles and family of Dallas, Texas, and Loyd Bowles and family of Dallas, Texas; and a host of friends and acquaintances. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Mollie Bowles; her husband, Collins P.
