HINKLE Donald G. Hinkle, a longtime North Coast resident and community leader who practiced law in Mendocino County for nearly 30 years and served on several boards and commissions, died Monday at his home in Napa. He was 69. He died following a two-month battle with cancer. Hinkle lived in Ukiah, Santa Rosa and Napa during his 33 years as a North Coast resident. A native of Lone Wolf, Okla., Hinkle lived in various Western states while growing up and attending college. His studies at the University of Wyoming were interrupted when he enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean War. After the war he enrolled at Denver University to study accounting, graduating with honors in 1956. His first job was with the Price Waterhouse Accounting Firm in New York City. In 1959 Hinkle and his wife Sybil Hinkle moved to California when he entered Stanford University Law School. After earning his law degree he practiced at two large urban law firms before moving to Ukiah in 1966. He joined the offices of Rawles, Nelson, Golden & Poulos where he practiced law until 1994 when he was forced to retire because of a heart condition. During his many years in Mendocino County he served as the county's inheritance tax appraiser and was a member of the Water Conservation Board and the Mendocino County Grand Jury. He was chairman of the school personnel board. Sybil Hinkle said her husband was liberal and progressive. She said he grew up poor in Oklahoma but prospered through his intelligence and hard work. "He never forgot his roots and always felt he should give something back for the opportunities this country provided," said Sybil Hinkle. The Hinkles bought a condominium in Santa Rosa in 1990 where they lived part time until moving to Sonoma County full time in 1994. In 1997 they moved to a home at the Napa Yacht Club. Hinkle was an avid golfer and exercise enthusiast. He served on the board of the Airport Health Club in Santa Rosa. In addition to his wife, Hinkle is survived by his son, John Spence Hinkle of Healdsburg; daughter, Karen Van Atta of Novato, and brothers, Joe Hinkle of Wyoming and Bill Hinkle of Annaheim. Graveside services are at 11 a.m. Friday at Tulocay Cemetery in Napa. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Richard Pierce Funeral Home at 1660 Silverado Trail in Napa.
