Ray was born June 25, 1920, in Sedan, Oklahoma, to Jerry and Sophia Neuwirth. His family moved to Bakersfield in 1936. After graduating from BCUHS, he worked, in San Diego, building war planes until he was inducted into the Army in October of 1941. He was stationed in San Francisco when Pearl Harbor put us into World War II. He served in the Western Pacific including Iwo Jima and Saipan, where he was wounded. After recuperating in Hawaii, he was honorably discharged in November 1945. He quickly renewed old friendships with high school buddies Sam and Roy Sigler. Thats when he discovered their little sister Sara had grown up. They started dating on February 22, 1946, and married exactly one year later. In 1951, they welcomed their first son, Rick, and in 1954 they welcomed their second son, Dave. They bought their first RV in 1958 and spent every weekend and vacation camping and fishing. After retiring in 1983, he turned his attention to family, friends and fishing! Ray and Sara traveled much of the USA, but his favorite place, Gods Country, was Klamath, California, where he spent time every summer since 1947. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sara; sons and daughters-in-law, Rick and Judi, Dave and Kelley; grandchildren, Caty, Kylie, and Douglas and step-grandson, Andrew Mayfield. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Special thanks to Sharon and Tammy of Optimal Hospice for making Dads last days at home comfortable. Graveside services will be held Friday, June 13, 2003 at 9:30 a.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 3700 River Blvd. Viewing will be today, Thursday, June 12, 3 to 9 p.m. Greenlawn Mortuary Funeral Directors -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Kiowa County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/kiowa/kiowa.html
