Moore Aug. 17, 1921 - July 27, 2006 Resident of Concord Jack H. Moore, a long time resident of Concord and World War II veteran passed away peacefully July 27th with his family at his side after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Jack was born in Bengal, Oklahoma on August 17th, 1921 of Irish and Native American ancestry. His family moved west to California when he was 9-years-old, and like many other families of the time, Jack was forced out of school early in order to help support his large family of nine children. The family settled in the Northern California town of Hayfork where Jack worked in a lumber mill as a setter, in a lumber camp as a cook, and worked in the Conservation Corps. He enlisted in the Marine Corps soon after the Pearl Harbor attack and was stationed in the South Pacific for three years with the 6th Marine Division, 22nd Battalion where he attained the rank of Sergeant. Serving in the Marine Corps was one of his proudest achievements. After the war he spent a year in the Merchant Marines and traveled the world. Jack returned to the Bay Area where he found work in Emeryville at the Judson Pacific Murphy steel mill as a shop foreman in fabrication. Through some close friends he met and married Anne, his wife of 53 years. Together they started their family and lived briefly in San Leandro. In 1963 they moved to Concord where at the encouragement of a friend, he left the mill and started a new career as a Landscape Contractor. While in the landscape industry he was active in the CLCA and was the recipient of numerous awards for his achievements including the American Association of Nursurymen Award for Commercial Landscaping from then First Lady Patricia Nixon in Washington D.C. After more than 20 years in the business, Jack retired from his landscape business and started a Hardware business in Bay Point that he operated for 10 years before he retired. In retirement he managed some investment properties until his illness. Jack enjoyed hunting, fishing, carpentry, gardening, cooking, and his grandchildren. He will be remembered for his tireless work and dedication to the Lions Club, the Lions Wilderness Camp, the Diablo Valley Blind Center, the Mt. Diablo Detachment 942 Marine Corps League and various Bay Point associations which occupied most of his spare time for the past twenty-five years. Jack was also very active in the Bay Point area and was well known in the business community there. He was a totally selfless person who spent his time helping others. He is survived by his loving wife Anne, his children, David of Vallejo, Greg of Clayton, and Barbara of Mountain Ranch; his grandchildren, Brian and David Moore of Brentwood, Matt and Mike Moore of Clayton. His siblings Louella Swayze of Redding, Juanita Lackey of Madera, Billy Jean Staten of Illinois, Mary Baird of Sanger, Shirley Bruce of Oklahoma, and brother Marvin Moore of Sanger. He was preceded in death by his two brothers Horace and Ben Moore and parents Mary and Omer Moore. We will miss him dearly but are thankful and appreciative of how he gave so much of himself and made our lives so enjoyable, and that he is in a better place now. As per Jack's request a memorial service will be held at the Lafayette Veterans Memorial Building located at 3780 Mt. Diablo Boulevard in Lafayette on August 12th at 3 p.m. There will be no public funeral. At the family's request, donations can be made in lieu of flowers to the Lions Club Wilderness Camp, Hospice of Contra Costa County, or the American Cancer Society.
