Her husband, William Cowan, and an infant daughter, Virginia Gay Cowan, preceded mother in death. Mother began life in Vesta, AR and grew up in the Spiro, Fort Coffee area of Oklahoma. A few years after their marriage, mother and father moved to California arriving in the Shafter area. From there, they lived for periods in Lancaster, Santa Monica, and Venice before moving to China Lake during the summer of 1947. When father retired from the Naval Weapons Center, they moved to Mountain Mesa, CA and bought a home with a view of Lake Isabella. Father had his vegetable garden and fishing and moher was able to grow the flowers she loved. For the past three years, necessitated by the debilitating effects of Alzheimer, motehr lived in Ridgecrest with her son and daughter-in-law. Outside of home, mother was very active in church, first at the All Faith Chapel, China Lake and then the Mountain Mesa Church of Christ. For the past three years, she attended the Ridgecrest Crossroads Community Church. Before her health failed, mother was an active volunteer at the Mountain Mesa Retirement Home doing the small things that she could to make life better for the people residing there. Being the loving soul that she was, she would visit with people needing company and cheering-up, write letter for those who could not and pray with those in need of prayer. Mother leaves a bountiful legacy: one son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Dottie Cowan of Ridgecrest; four daughters and sons-in-law, Tena and Don Miller of Henderson, NV, Marjo Miles Kvammen of Ridgecrest, Linda and Louie Wincn of Ridgecrest, Betty and Bill Raffel of Ridgecrest; 13 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Mother was the heart and soul of our family, and we will miss her dearly until we unite again with her spirit. All of those whose life she touched came to love her and think of her as one of their own. We wish to thank all you for your prayers and support during this time of trial and grief. We also wish to acknowledge our special thanks and gratitude to Dr. Iresha Goonesinghe, the Nursing Staff of the Ridgecrest Regional Hospital, Optimal Hospice and Sandersons Assisted In-Home Care. Family requests donations to Alzheimer research or your favorite charity would be appreciated.
