CARLTON NOV. 23, 1916 - FEB. 11, 2007 Ruth Ann Carlton, of Modesto, CA, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer, with her loving family at her side, at Memorial Hospital, February 11, 2007. Ruth was born on Novermber 23, 1916 in Summerfield, OK, one of six daughters, to a hard working farming family. She married young and went on to have eight children. Ruth had a number of jobs throughout the years, including cannery worker, but her most important job of all was raising her children and grandchildren. A shared sentiment among grandchildren and family friends is that we all remember being babysat by Grandma. From lifelong friends to casual acquaintances, everyone who met her immediately fell in love with her. She loved nothing more than bargain shopping, reading romance novels, and snuggling with her grand- children and great- grandchildren. Even at the advanced age of 90, Ruth was a spry little lady with a lovely mind and had a better memory than those less than half her age. Ruth exhibited a strength of character in the face of much adversity, and a kindness of heart that knew no boundaries. Many people knew her by Granny and G.G. Ruth was preceded in death by her loving husband, Lowell A. Carlton; children, Arthur U. Carlton, Aline Woodman-Roberts; sisters, Lydia Brown, Effie Mathis, Thelma Tigner, Hazel Sitton; grandchildren, Joy Derby, Little Benny Woodman, Craig Ballard; great-granddaughter, Jenny Woodman and great-babyboy Derby. She is survived by her children, Pauline Colm of Potaeu, OK, Dean Jernigan of Escalon, CA, Larry Carlton of Mountain View, AR, Phyllis Schwerdtfeger of Modesto, CA, Michael Carlton of Corcoran, CA, Drinda Tockey of Modesto, CA; sister, Leon Sitton of Poteau, OK; and 72 grand, great-grand, and great-great-grand children (at last count). Visitation to be held Wednesday, February 14 from 1:00-5:00pm at Deegan Chapel, Escalon. Services to be held Thursday, February 15 at 1:00pm at Deegan Funeral Chapel with burial to follow Burwood Cemetery.
