All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Durant Democrat Cecil Everidge James, 87 Cecil Everidge James, 87, Colbert, formerly of Talihina, passed from this life on Nov. 27, 2004, in Denison, Texas. He was born Jan. 19, 1917, in Sardis to Moses and Emma Anderson James. He was very proud of his American Indian heritage and being a Navy veteran of World War II. He married Ruth James Dec. 21, 1947, in Stigler. He graduated from high school at Chilocco Indian Agricultural School and later received a bachelor's degree from Southeastern Oklahoma State College. He taught and coached at Sardis and Tuskahoma schools and later worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs Department of Education for 28 years where he served in many capacities until his retirement in 1983. He was a member of the Choctaw and Chickasaw Nation and was very active in tribal functions. He was one of the founding members of the Choctaw Nation Historical Society and the Talihina Indian Club. He was of the Baptist faith, and he enjoyed doing work for his church. He was also a member of the Texas Southwest Cattleman Association. He is survived by his wife Ruth, of the home; two daughters and sons-in- law, Gwen and William Takes Horse, Colbert, and Sharon R. James-Schimdt, M.D. and Joe Schmidt, Welling; son Mark Stephen James, M.D., Oklahoma City; grandchildren Adam and Tana Takes Horse and Jacob, Aaron and Kara Schmidt; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Wynona and Joe Gibbs, Sherman, Texas, and Ramona and Henry Hartgers, San Jose, Calif.; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Neoma Rainwater; and two brothers, Eugene and Woodrow James. Pallbearers for the service will be William Takes Horse, Joe Schmidt, Adam Takes Horse, Aaron Grey, Joseph Stevenson and Mike Gibbs. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Talihina First Baptist Church with Rev. Kip and Ollie Heth officiating.
