Owen, Mildred Ann Stewart    

A memorial service will be held Thursday, August 16th, 11:00 a.m., at 
Doughty-Calhoun- O'Meara Funeral Home, 1100 Truxtun Ave., in 
Bakersfield, California. Beloved wife of Robert Thurman Owen, Sr. 
Mildred and Thurman shared their 60th anniversary on June 29th of 
this year. Mildred's love of family, friends and especially children 
was evident throughout their life together. Born in Heavener, 
Oklahoma on March 27, 1928, she moved to Bakersfield with her 
parents, James and Lela Stewart in 1937. Mildred graduated from East 
High in 1947 and married Robert Thurman Owen, Sr. on June 29, 1947. 
Mildred earned her driver's license at the age of 34. She worked in 
school cafeterias for BCSD and Lakeside. Mildred and Thurman were 
very active in the Mt. Vernon PTA and received lifetime membership. 
They also were youth leaders at Trinity United Methodist Church 
taking many teenagers on campouts to Pismo Beach. Later they were 
active members of All Saints Episcopal Church where she was a 
faithful prayer chain participate. She was a Lakeside 4-H leader in 
sewing and cooking. Mildred enjoyed gardening and was a prolific 
producer of tomatoes, squash, and various other vegetables. 
Adventuring with Thurman and the grandchildren was by far Mildred's 
favorite activity. Mildred leaves behind her husband, Thurman; 
daughters, Lela Owen Pratt and Carla Owen Jeffers; son and wife, 
Robert and Lora Owen Jr.; grandson and wife, Robert and Claudia Owen 
III; granddaughters and husbands, Rebecca and Joe Morrissey, April 
and Jamal Manuel, and Georgia Jeffers; great-grandchildren, Jeremiah 
and Alana Manuel and Shaka Morrissey. Mildred also leaves the 
children of her heart: nephews and nieces, James and Charlotte 
Walker, Seba Walker and Randy Townsend; daughter and husband, Paula 
Owen and David Pellman; son and wife, Douglas and Amy Raley. Mildred 
always had room for one more child in the house and one more plate on 
the table. She demonstrated that the more love you give, the more 
your heart has to give. The Owen family would like to thank Mercy 3 
West for their compassion, respect and genuine caring. Psalms 66: 16-
