Former resident of Antioch John Schaak, 65, passed away at the Hospice Home in Billings, of congestive heart failure on June 5, 2006 surrounded by family and friends. He was born April 29, 1941, in Hardin, to Daniel and Lydia Schaak. Growing up on a ranch east of Billings, he attended country schools at Arrow Creek and Worden. John enlisted in the Navy, serving on the U.S. Hornet from Jan. 12, 1960 to Dec. 20, 1963, being honorably discharged. He then became a lifetime trucker, driving many, many miles, and winning numerous awards for his dedicated service. After returning to Montana for two years, he moved to Antioch, CA, where he met and married his soul mate, Ann McKnight on July 12, 1972, living in Antioch from 1968 to 2000. They then moved to their retirement home in Shady Point, OK. John returned to Montana to haul grain with his brother. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann; parents, Daniel and Lydia Schaak; son, Jimmy Dean; and brother, Jack of Pittsburg, CA. He is survived by his daughter, Laura (Cy) Youles of Lakeport, Calif.; sons, Mike McKnight of Pittsburg and Keith McKnight of Shady Point, OK; and daughter, Sue (John) Culcasi of Pittsburg; sister, Shirley (Alan) Black of Huntley; brother, Edward (Donna) Schaak of Billings; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. John was a very loving, caring and compassionate person who was always there when needed. He was truly loved and admired by all who knew him. Our heartfelt thanks goes to the Billings Clinic Staff and Big Sky Hospice for their gracious and loving care and support for John. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 9, at Smith's Downtown Chapel, 925 S. 27th St. Interment of his cremains will be in Antioch at a later date. Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice or the charity of one's choice.
