She was born December 12, 1919 in Talahina, OK. She moved to Plaster City as a young child and attended Dixieland School, graduating from the 8th grade in 1932. She attended High School in El Centro. Crystal married Lester Schartz and together they had 2 daughters. She later moved back to the Imperial Valley from Utah, where she met and married Paul Steward Sr. in 1941 and had one son. She worked as a manicurist and owned and operated Mary Ann Beauty Shop in El Centro. In the mid-60's , Crystal and her husband owned and operated Allied Beauty/Fashion Uniforms in El Centro until retiring in 1990. Aside from operating her own business, she was active with Guide Dogs of America, a Charter member of Imperial Valley Kennel Club, a member of Pilot Club of El Centro where she served as President and Governor and a Charter Member of Pilot of Golden Sands. Crystal was also a member of Toastmistress, International and a registered Parliamentarian. A celebration of life memorial service will be held Saturday, June 2 at 10:30 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 8th and Ross Streets, in El Centro. She was preceded in death by her husband Paul; sister, Wilma; brothers, Art and Edward and daughter Barbara. Crystal is survived by her son, Paul Jr. and Diana Steward; daughter, Norma and Ed Laverty; stepson, Raymond and Bobby Steward; step- daughter, Shirley MacDonald; numerous grandchildren and great- grandchildren.
