Drake passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, September 6, 2006. She was born in Meeker, Oklahoma on Sunday, November 14, 1920, the oldest of three daughters to John and Ola (Cole) Coleman. She graduated from Okmulgee High School in 1938 and worked as a legal secretary for a short time. She married J.E. Drake in 1940 and they were married 53 years before he passed away in 1993. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Glenna Hutchinson of Okmulgee in 1988. Helen enjoyed a full and active life that included golf, bridge, sewing, reading, traveling, visiting the elderly, helping others and being with her many friends. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church where she spent many years as the teacher of the 2 year old class. She is survived by her children; Dr. James Drake and his wife, Nikki of Williamsburg, VA and Shelley Lewis and her husband, Doug of Tulsa; her sister, Shirley Landrum of Bartlesville; grandchildren, Courtney Lewis Ostendorf and husband, Mike of Kansas City, KS and Whitney Lewis of St. Louis, MO and her special friend, Ted Horner of Okmulgee. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 8, 2006 at the First Baptist Church in Okmulgee with Dr. Dennis Taylor officiating. Burial will follow the service at the Okmulgee Cemetery under the direction of Gary Kelley of Shurden-Kelley Funeral Home of Okmulgee. The family requests in lieu of flowers donations be made to the charity of your choice.
