Reed, File Number WC964-611 James S. Reed was born 13 Mar 1845 near Warrensburg, in Johnson County, Kansas, a son of Andrew J. Reed and his wife, Emily. James S. Reed died 27 May 1925 in Coyle, Logan County, Oklahoma. In 1850, the Andrew J. Reed family lived near the town of Oregon in Holt County, Missouri. In 1860, Andrew J. Reed was living near Troy, in Center Township, Doniphan County, Kansas. The family was enumerated with the David Martin family. According to the pension, the other children of Andrew J. and Emily Reed were William J., Andrew J., Emily I., and Mary E. Reed. William J. Reed enlisted in the Missouri State Militia, but his unit was never sent to active war duty. James S. Reed enlisted 8 June 1863 in Company C, 13th Kansas Infantry. He also served in Company B, 1st Kansas Infantry, and was discharged at Little Rock, Arkansas on the 13th of August 1865. His physical description was 5' 9 1/2", fair complexion, gray eyes, sandy hair, occupation was given as Farmer. After service, James Reed lived in Missouri, California, and Kansas. He settled in Oklahoma about 1889. James Reed married Mary E. Brown 27 Sept 1865 in Holt Co., MO with Rev. Eli C. Towne officiating. Mary's date of birth was 17 September 1846. She died 3 January 1933 in Coyle, Logan County, Oklahoma. The children of James Reed and Mary E. Brown were Ona S. Reed born July 18, 1866 in Holt County, Missouri, Harry M. Reed, born 23 March 1869 in Doniphan County, Kansas and Gilbert Roy Reed, born 26 May 1874 in Smith County, Kansas.
