All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== ::NOT LISTED BARRY -- John E., a Lawyer and Civic Leader, died on Monday, September 25, 2006, after a brief battle with cancer. He was 81. Barry married Anne Dowell in 1954, and together they raised four children, Kathleen, Margaret, Alison and David. An accomplished painter and scholar, he was passionate about the arts, history, travel and languages. He spoke French, Spanish and Italian. He and his wife loved to take their family on learning vacations to historic places, all over the United States and to foreign countries. They also took the family on camping and ski trips. Barry dedicated himself to arts and civic organizations in Tulsa and the Midwest, and was inducted into the Tulsa Historical Society Hall of Fame in 2004. He was a Trustee of Philbrook Museum of Art and the John Steele Zink Foundation, and served on the Boards of Directors of the Tulsa Performing Arts Center Trust, the Midwest Arts Alliance, the Tulsa Ballet and the Nimrod International Journal, a literary magazine published by the University of Tulsa. Barry was a past President of the Arts and Humanities Council of Tulsa. His civic activities also include service on behalf of the Metropolitan Tulsa Chamber of Commerce and Holland Hall School. During World War II, he served as a combat infantryman in France, Germany and Austria. After the war, he earned his undergraduate and law degrees, with honors, from the University of Oklahoma. A Fulbright Scholar, he did postgraduate studies in law at the London School of Economics in London, England. Barry then joined the law firm of Connor and Winters, where he worked for nearly 60 years. He was born on November 22, 1924, in Guthrie, OK, to Charles and Nellie Ashby Barry. He is survived by: his wife, Anne; his 4 children, Kathleen Plumb and her husband, Charlie of Tulsa, Margaret Barry of Chicago, Alison Hicks of Austin and David Barry of Denver; 5 grandchildren, Joe and Nora Plumb and Catherine, John and Madeline Hicks; his siblings, Charles Barry, and his wife, Elizabeth of Houston and Kathleen Parker and Bettie McInnis of Guthrie. Barry also leaves behind many nieces and nephews in the Barry and Dowell families. A Memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, September 30, 2006 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Tulsa. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Tulsa Historical Society and the Tulsa Arts and Humanities Council.
