NILES -- Joseph Allen, was born December 24, 1906 and passed away peacefully in Tulsa on Thursday, October 5, 2006, just 80 days short of living one hundred years. Joe was born in Guthrie, Indian Territory, a year before Oklahoma became the 46th state in our union. Yet, he lived long enough to work on the Gemini space project that eventually sent men to the moon. Joe Niles graduated from Central High School, Tulsa, the Culver Military Institute, and the California Institute of Technology with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked for a number of years with Pan American Petroleum, Bethlehem Supply Co., Douglas Aircraft, American Airlines, and North American Aviation. Joe Niles was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, and is survived by: his nephew, Christian Niles Seger and his wife, Constance of Houston, TX and their children, Katherine Niles Seger Weber and her husband, Andrew Weber, Christian Harris Seger and his wife, Lisa, and Hunter Joseph Seger. Joe Niles is also survived by his nieces, Linda Goldsmith of Tulsa, and her husband H. Ray Goldsmith, and Mary Katherine Winters of Salinas, CA; grandnieces include, Sydney Webb Morton and her husband, Wendell Morton, Sarah Elizabeth Webb Billings and her husband, Jonathan Billings. Joe Niles was preceded in death by his grandnephew, Eric Leslie Webb. Joe Niles' paternal grandfather, Albert George Niles, answered the first call for volunteers in the Civil War at the age of fourteen and served with the 55th Ohio Volunteers. He was later captured, but survived the war in Andersonville prison. He then survived the sinking of the steamship "Sultana", while being repatriated after the war ended, and lived out his days in Tulsa, where he is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery. Joe Niles' maternal grandfather, J.W. McNeal, made the run into Oklahoma and established Oklahoma's first bank, in Guthrie, and also built the first brick building in Oklahoma. There will be a private Memorial service for Joseph Niles at The Parke, 7821 E. 76th St., Tulsa, OK, at 10 a.m., Monday, October 9, 2006. Joe Niles will be buried in the family plot at Rose Hill Cemetery, Tulsa. His family wishes to convey a special thanks to The Parke management and staff, and to Joe's tablemates, Al, Clyde, and Jeep at The Parke, who made his last six years there so enjoyable.
